Chapter 10 - the extra ninety minutes

Thomas Reed agreed to speak immediately.
He was sixty-seven and lived in Charleston.
He had attended a business conference at the Atlantic Crown that same week.
Claire remembered him as one of Robert’s earliest employees.
“What did Dad text you?” she asked.
Thomas showed Detective Collins.
A message from a number saved as Robert.
CLAIRE WILL BE IN THE LOBBY AROUND 3. ASK HER TO PRINT THE OLD BENNETT PROJECTIONS. KEEP HER BUSY UNTIL I CALL.
Robert denied sending it.
The number was not his current phone.
But Thomas explained:
“It was his old company number.”
Helen checked.
Robert had stopped using that number five years earlier.
Who controlled it now?
Bennett Coastal Holdings.
Specifically, an executive line assigned to Vanessa’s department.
Vanessa denied sending the message.
Phone-server logs showed it originated remotely.
Someone had access to old company communications.
Claire asked:
“Why would anyone keep me downstairs longer?”
Detective Collins answered:
“Maybe they needed more time.”
“For what?”
Room 306 footage was reviewed minute by minute.
Robert and Vanessa searched the suitcase.
Grant entered.
Elaine remained near the balcony.
Then, at 3:48, all three left.
Lily was still outside.
For the next fifty-six minutes, Room 306 was empty.
Claire stared.
“So nobody needed the room.”
Daniel Ross corrected her.
“Not through the main door.”
A maintenance access log showed someone entered through a service panel connecting to the neighboring suite.
The hotel had an old housekeeping passage between premium rooms.
Only staff and engineering knew it existed.
At 4:11, a maintenance override opened the interior service door.
Camera coverage did not show the person directly.
Only a shadow.
At 4:34, the override reset.
Who had access?
Three engineers.
Two housekeeping supervisors.
And Daniel Ross.
All were accounted for except a retired facilities manager whose old credential had never been deleted.
Name:
Thomas Reed.
Claire stared at him.
“No.”
Thomas looked shocked.
“I haven’t worked for this hotel.”
Daniel checked again.
Not the same Thomas Reed.
Different man.
The retired facilities manager was:
Thomas Redd.
Two d’s.
An unfortunate coincidence.
He died eight months earlier.
His credential should have been disabled.
Someone had copied it.
The hotel launched an internal investigation.
Inside Room 306, nothing obvious had been stolen during that fifty-six-minute period.
Then Elaine remembered.
“My purse.”
Claire turned.
“What about it?”
“I had left my medication case inside.”
“Was it missing?”
“No.”
“What else?”
Elaine thought.
“A bank key.”
Helen’s eyes sharpened.
“What bank key?”
Elaine looked embarrassed.
“The safe-deposit box where Ruth’s original trust is stored.”
Everyone went still.
“Was it in your purse?”
“Yes.”
“Is it still there?”
Elaine checked.
The key remained.
But Daniel asked:
“Could someone have photographed it?”
Helen shook her head.
“A photograph doesn’t open a box.”
“No. But the tag?”
Elaine pulled the key out.
A small paper label showed the bank branch and box number.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
Someone did not need the key itself.
They needed to know where the original lived.
Detective Collins contacted the bank.
Elaine’s box had been accessed the previous afternoon.
At 4:52 p.m.
While Claire remained downstairs.
Elaine stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“Who accessed it?”
The bank had accepted a power of attorney.
Purportedly signed by Elaine.
Claire closed her eyes.
Another forgery.
Security footage showed a woman entering the vault.
Not Vanessa.
Not anyone Claire recognized.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Elaine went pale.
“I know her.”
“Who?”
“Ruth’s former attorney.”
Helen frowned.
“Ruth’s attorney was Samuel Kent.”
“Before Samuel.”
Elaine whispered:
“Marjorie Mercer.”
Claire stared.
“Mercer?”
“Yes.”
Grant’s aunt.
Before leaving private practice, Marjorie Mercer had helped Ruth draft early versions of the Marsh Point trust.
Then Ruth fired her.
No one had told Claire why.
The bank footage showed Marjorie leaving with a thin document case.
The original trust may now be gone.
And someone had used the hotel scheme not merely to help Robert.
May you like
They had used Robert’s plan as cover for a separate theft.
👉 While Robert and Vanessa were focused on forcing the sale, Grant Mercer’s aunt secretly used the distraction to access Elaine’s bank box and take documents Ruth had protected for years.
