Chapter 10 - MARK’S BUSINESS PARTNER TAKES CONTROL
Daniel petitioned the court for temporary control of Harbor Point.
The company could not survive under a missing executive accused of fraud. Investors demanded answers, employees needed paychecks, and lenders prepared to seize unfinished properties.
The judge appointed an independent receiver.
Mark and Vanessa lost access to every company account.
Daniel turned over his own email and accepted suspension during the audit.
“I signed things I should have questioned,” he told employees. “You deserve to hear that from me before investigators say it.”
His honesty did not save Harbor Point.
It saved evidence.
The receiver found a hidden accounting category called Family Acquisition Costs.

Robert’s monthly fees.
Evelyn’s debt settlements.
Vanessa’s consulting company.
Hotel executive gratuities.
Paulson Legal Services, the firm that notarized Claire’s forged consent.
Mark had budgeted the family conspiracy as a business expense.
One invoice described the vacation as a beneficiary-conversion meeting.
Claire read the phrase with disgust.
To Mark, she had not been a sister-in-law or mother.
She was a beneficiary to convert.
Grace filed a civil action seeking cancellation of every Harbor Point obligation connected to Seabrook.
The lender admitted it failed to contact Claire directly despite relying on her property.
Regulators opened a compliance investigation.
The first payment Mark said had already been released was traced to Vanessa’s holding company, then divided among several accounts.
Most remained recoverable.
The four hundred thousand transferred before Mark disappeared had been withdrawn in cashier’s checks.
Robert possessed one.
Vanessa possessed two.
The final check remained missing.
Evelyn told police Mark took it inside the black suitcase.
She claimed not to know where he went.
The rideshare records revealed another trip.
After visiting Robert’s house, Mark traveled to the beachfront hotel through a service road.
Security footage showed him entering an unoccupied maintenance cottage on Seabrook land.
Police surrounded it.
Mark was not there.
The black suitcase remained open on the floor.
Inside were original trust records, Claire’s copied passport, blank custody forms, and an old will.
The will appeared to give Robert controlling authority over Seabrook.
Grace recognized it as an early draft Eleanor had revoked before death.
Mark had taken it because he hoped to challenge Claire’s trust ownership or confuse the title long enough to delay the bank freeze.
A printer sat beside the suitcase.
One page had been produced recently.
It was a petition claiming Claire had abducted Lily from a lawful family caregiver during a mental-health crisis.
The caregiver named was Vanessa.
The attached hotel still image showed Claire carrying Lily down the hallway.
The frame excluded the child’s bare feet and the open suite door.
Mark intended to turn rescue into abduction.
Police found the missing cashier’s check beneath the printer.
They also found a satellite tracker broadcasting from the cottage.
Someone had activated it thirty minutes before officers arrived.
Mark had lured them there.
While police searched Seabrook, Claire’s replacement hotel received a call from a man identifying himself as Lily’s father.
He requested their room number.
The receptionist refused.
