Chapter 13 - the uncle who never left Tennessee
Thomas Bennett was supposed to be in Oregon.
That was what everyone believed.
Samuel had not seen his younger brother in twelve years.
They had fallen out after their mother died.
Thomas accused Samuel of stealing family property.
Samuel accused Thomas of gambling away his inheritance.
They stopped speaking.
Yet Emily’s video placed Thomas in Tennessee three years earlier.
Inside Daniel Mercer’s rectory.
With Aaron Bennett.
Noah looked at Samuel.
“What did Uncle Thomas know?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stop saying that.”
Samuel’s frustration broke.
“What do you want from me? I didn’t know my father faked his death. I didn’t know Emily met him. I didn’t know Ruth hid Ryan. I have spent half my life being lied to too.”
Ruth answered quietly:
“You also spent half your life avoiding questions.”
Samuel looked at her.
She continued.
“There is a difference.”
Agent Jensen traced Thomas.
No Oregon tax records for six years.
No current address.
But property owned through an LLC outside Chattanooga.
TBI searched it.
Empty.
Inside they found recent photographs of the Bennett house.
Lily’s school.
Noah’s apartment.
Samuel’s workshop.
Thomas had been watching them.
One photograph showed Charles Vane entering Thomas’s property two months earlier.
Another showed Sheriff Pike.
Charles had not vanished randomly.
He had been meeting Thomas.
Noah asked:
“Could Thomas be the man who attacked Charles?”
Jensen replied:
“Possible.”
“But Charles was working for Daniel.”
“Maybe not at the end.”
They recovered documents from Thomas’s home.
He had been buying disputed properties from Cumberland Development at low prices.
A quiet transfer of assets.
Thomas was dismantling the old company from inside—or taking it over.
Then they found a letter from Charles.
TOM,
RUTH HAS THE PAGE.
DANIEL IS LOSING CONTROL.
PIKE WILL PANIC.
IF WE MOVE NOW, WE CAN END THIS BEFORE AARON DIES.
Noah frowned.
“End it?”
Maybe Charles and Thomas had formed their own plan.
Not to preserve the conspiracy.
To seize or expose it.
Another letter clarified.
WE DO THIS YOUR WAY. NO ONE TOUCHES LILY.
Charles had insisted.
That explained the storage room.
He locked Lily inside because Pike intended to use her.
Wrong.
Terrifying.
But possibly meant to keep her out of Pike’s hands.
The moral lines remained ugly.
Charles still helped abduct Ruth.
Still terrorized a child.
Intent did not erase action.
Agent Jensen received a report.
Charles Vane’s body had been found in a wrecked vehicle near Mill Creek.
He had been dead approximately twenty-four hours.
Noah stared.
“Who killed him?”
Unknown.
A handwritten note was found in his pocket.
SAMUEL,
I’M SORRY ABOUT LILY.
I THOUGHT LOCKING HER AWAY WOULD KEEP PIKE FROM TAKING HER.
THOMAS SAID HE WOULD GET RUTH OUT.
I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.
Samuel read it.
His hands shook.
Charles had changed sides too late.
Then another line:
THE RECORDING EMILY FOUND WASN’T AARON’S ONLY CONFESSION.
THOMAS HAS THE ORIGINAL.
If true, Thomas possessed evidence beyond the teddy bear.
Noah looked at Jensen.
“We find him.”
Thomas found them first.
A package arrived at Linda’s home.
No return address.
Inside:
A cassette tape.
Old.
Label:
SAMUEL — 1989.
Samuel stared.
“I was twenty-three.”
They found a cassette player.
Aaron Bennett’s voice filled the room.
“Samuel, if you ever hear this, it means Thomas did what I asked.”
Samuel stopped breathing.
Aaron continued:
“One of my sons will inherit the land.”
“Which?” Ethan whispered.
The tape answered.
“Not you.”
Samuel’s face tightened.
“You were always too soft.”
Ruth took his hand.
Aaron continued:
“Thomas understands what survival costs.”
Then a younger voice entered the recording.
Thomas.
“What about Samuel’s kids?”
Aaron laughed.
“They’ll benefit without ever knowing.”
Noah felt disgust.
Thomas had been chosen as Aaron’s heir decades earlier.
Maybe he never left the organization.
Maybe he only pretended to.
The tape jumped.
Aaron said:
“If Daniel becomes greedy, remove him.”
Thomas answered calmly:
“And if Charles talks?”
“Remove him too.”
Samuel stopped the tape.
Noah stared.
The instructions sounded murderous.
Jensen took the cassette as evidence.
Then Lily entered carrying her teddy bear.
“Uncle Noah?”
“What?”
“A man is outside.”
Everyone turned.
TBI agents moved.
Noah looked through the window.
Thomas Bennett stood beyond the gate.
Hands raised.
Alone.
He looked older than Noah remembered but unmistakable.
Samuel walked to the porch.
The brothers stared at each other after twelve years.
Thomas spoke first.
“Before you arrest me, ask Ruth who actually called Pike the night Emily died.”
Samuel slowly turned.
Ruth’s face changed.
Noah felt dread.
“Mom?”
She began to cry.
