Chapter 1

Soldier Father Plays the Nursery Footage That Recorded His Pregnant Daughter’s Abuse.
Retired Colonel Thomas Brand stood inside the women’s medical clinic near Fort Liberty with one arm locked protectively around his pregnant daughter.
Beate Miller was seven months along, trembling in a dusty-pink cardigan, one hand pressed over her belly, bruises darkening across her shoulder and upper arm.
Across from them, Detective Sarah Brenner watched the smartphone in Thomas’s hand.
On the screen, the preserved nursery-camera footage showed a distant bedroom angle. No details were clear enough for strangers to enjoy, but enough was visible for professionals to understand.
A man’s silhouette.
A belt raised.
A woman trapped near a crib.
Thomas’s voice came out low, controlled, and shaking with fury only because he refused to let it become something louder.
“He struck her fifty times. The camera recorded every one.”
Beate flinched at the number as if hearing it from her father made it more real.
Dr. Patricia Richter moved closer, face calm but eyes disturbed, and gently checked Beate’s pulse.
The baby kicked sharply.
Beate gasped and gripped her belly.
“Dad… he said he would take my baby if I told anyone.”
Thomas’s jaw hardened.
Detective Brenner stepped closer and photographed the phone screen without taking it from him.
“The original footage is preserved. He cannot erase it now.”
Then Beate’s phone rang.
The sound cut through the clinic like a hand reaching into the room.
Beate recoiled.
Thomas looked at the caller name.
Gero.
He answered and put it on speaker.
A falsely calm male voice filled the examination room.
“Beate, come home before your father makes this worse.”
Dr. Richter froze.
Detective Brenner silently began recording the call.
Thomas raised the phone closer.
“You’re on speaker, Gero. Keep talking.”
Silence followed.
Beate looked toward Detective Brenner and saw the detective’s expression change.
For the first time, Gero’s threat had not landed inside a closed house.

It had landed in front of witnesses.
