Chapter 11 - the ledger aboard the meridian

Thomas refused to leave the dock.
“That is exactly what she wants,” Eleanor said.
“She wants you on the Meridian.”
“She wants control over where I stand.”
“And threatening my boat gives it to her.”
Investigators moved the vessel and emptied the fuel tank. The targeting image had been recorded earlier, but no one assumed the threat was finished.
The Coast Guard identified the Meridian’s likely route using storm currents and the four-second transmission.
Melissa had chosen waters near an abandoned naval testing corridor. Radar coverage was inconsistent.
Eleanor agreed to a controlled response.
She sent a message through the same channel:
I will come for the ledger. Thomas remains untouched.
Melissa replied:
Bring Miriam’s original trust documents.
She wanted the legal instruments capable of freezing Hart Recovery Holdings.
Eleanor prepared copies containing a hidden tracking fiber. The originals remained in court custody.
The meeting would occur aboard an Ashcroft service vessel under distant Coast Guard surveillance. Eleanor insisted on appearing personally.
Thomas objected until he understood she intended to go whether he joined or not.
“No solo decisions,” he reminded her.
“You made that rule.”
“And you’re already looking for a dignified way around it.”
Thomas joined the operation as civilian navigation support.
They reached the rendezvous point after midnight.
The Meridian appeared through the fog without lights.
Melissa stood alone on the rear deck.
She wore a dark waterproof coat, and her red yacht dress was gone. She looked less like a grieving daughter-in-law and more like the financial strategist she had always been.
Eleanor crossed on a narrow boarding line.
Thomas remained aboard the service vessel.
Melissa searched Eleanor for a transmitter but did not find the tracking fiber woven into the document case.
“You should have stayed dead,” Melissa said.
“You should have learned whether I could swim.”
Melissa almost smiled.
“Connor said you hated deep water.”
“I hated depending on him to operate the yacht.”
They entered the bridge.
Robert Hart’s original ledger lay open on the navigation table.
It showed that William—not Robert—authorized several unauthorized transfers during the company’s early years.
Robert discovered them and demanded an outside audit.
William altered the account codes, redirected suspicion toward Robert, and used Eleanor’s family money to purchase Robert’s shares after his removal.
Eleanor recognized her own signature on the financing approval.
William told her the funds would stabilize the company after Robert’s theft.
“He used me,” Eleanor said.
“He used everyone,” Melissa replied.
“Did your father keep copies?”
“He hid them aboard this ship. William sold the Meridian through shell companies because he believed the records had been destroyed.”
“How did you find it?”
“My father left coordinates in a letter.”
“Why not expose this publicly?”
“I tried.”
Melissa contacted Ashcroft lawyers years earlier. They threatened litigation and called the documents forged.
She approached Connor next.
He believed her after comparing private company records.
Instead of exposing William, Connor offered a partnership.
Help him take control from Eleanor.
Then he would restore Robert’s name and compensate the workers.
“You believed him,” Eleanor said.
“I believed his greed would remain predictable.”
“You married him.”
“I needed access.”
“You had a child with him?”
Melissa’s expression tightened.
“There is no child.”
Connor and Melissa had publicly discussed starting a family, but none existed.
The revelation removed one imagined bond.
Their marriage had been an alliance.
“When did murder enter the plan?” Eleanor asked.
“When you scheduled the audit.”
“You could have brought me the ledger.”
“You spent thirty years defending William.”
“I did not know.”
“You never asked.”
The words cut because they were true.
Eleanor had accepted her husband’s version without seeking Robert’s.
Yet Melissa’s next choices remained her own.
“You drugged me.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“Yes.”
“You stole from a restoration fund meant for coastal communities.”
“I redirected part of what Ashcroft owed.”
“You also placed eight million into your private control.”
“I needed resources.”
“For justice?”
“For survival.”
Melissa’s honesty did not contain remorse.
Eleanor placed the document case on the table.
“The trust freeze.”
Melissa reached toward it.
Eleanor closed her hand over the ledger.
“Both move together.”
A warning alarm sounded on the bridge.
Melissa looked toward the radar.
The Coast Guard surveillance vessel had been detected sooner than expected.
“You brought them.”
“You brought a gun to the yacht.”
Melissa seized the ledger and moved toward the engine controls.
The Meridian accelerated.
Eleanor struck the emergency cutoff.
Melissa pulled a pistol from beneath the console.
Thomas’s voice came through the external speaker.
“Eleanor, get down!”
The service vessel approached from the port side.
Melissa fired toward its bridge.
The bullet shattered glass but struck no one.
Eleanor drove the document case into Melissa’s arm.
The pistol fell.
They struggled against the navigation table as the unmanned ship continued through fog.
Melissa seized Eleanor’s hair and forced her toward the open side door.
“Perhaps the ocean needs a second chance.”
Eleanor struck Melissa’s injured wrist.
The younger woman recoiled.
Thomas boarded from the service vessel and entered the bridge.
Melissa retreated toward the lower deck with the ledger.
She locked a steel door behind her.
The Coast Guard surrounded the Meridian.
Officers forced the door.
The lower compartment was empty.
An open diving hatch led directly into the sea.
Melissa had prepared an underwater escape system.
A small breathing unit and propulsion scooter were missing.
On the floor lay one torn ledger page.
It contained William’s final transfer to a numbered account.
The account’s beneficiary was not Robert Hart.
May you like
It was Eleanor.
👉 William had placed the disputed money in Eleanor’s name, potentially making her appear complicit in the fraud that destroyed Melissa’s father.
