Chapter 6

Emily began crying when the word Hawaii became fragile.

Not when Victor admitted selling the cabin.

Not when Elena stood there with wet eyes.

Not when the colonel asked about authorization.

Only when the vacation looked uncertain.

“That cabin was just sitting there,” Emily said.

Elena turned her head slowly.

Emily’s straw hat tilted over her blonde hair, bright and absurd in the middle of a Fort Bliss legal office. Her pink suitcase stood beside military duffel bags like a joke nobody was laughing at.

“Just sitting there?” Elena repeated.

Emily’s eyes flashed.

“You never let us use it.”

“It was my father’s cabin.”

“Martha is your mother.”

“Martha did not build it.”

Victor stepped in.

“Don’t talk to your sister like that.”

“She’s not my sister when she’s spending my father’s property.”

Martha flinched.

At last.

Elena looked at her mother.

“You knew?”

Martha’s mouth trembled.

“Victor said it was complicated.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Martha looked down.

The answer was silence.

Elena felt the betrayal differently from Victor’s.

Victor had always been an invader.

Martha had been the person who let him in.

Mark cleared his throat.

“I need to pause any disbursement tied to the closing until title is clarified.”

Victor snapped toward him.

“You work for me.”

Mark’s face went pale, but he answered.

“I work under licensing law.”

The colonel gave a faint nod.

Not praise.

Recognition.

Victor lunged one step toward the desk, but the colonel lifted a hand.

“Remain where you are.”

Victor stopped.

He was not restrained.

Not arrested.

Not touched.

But for the first time, someone’s command outweighed his.

Elena watched that realization hit him.

It looked almost like pain.
