Chapter 7

Finnley remembered prison silence.

Not because it was quiet.

Prison is never truly quiet.

Metal doors.

Distant voices.

Shoes.

Keys.

Breathing.

But there is a kind of silence inside a man when everyone has decided his story for him.

Finnley had lived in that silence for fourteen months.

Reagan’s sentence cracked it.

That letter was never meant for him.

Not, That letter is forged.

Not, Camden never wrote it.

Not, There is no Unit 108.

Never meant for him.

His attorney stood slowly.

“Your Honor, the defense requests that Mrs. Dennis’s statement be entered into the record.”

The prosecutor objected immediately.

The judge raised one hand.

“Overruled for the present purpose.”

Reagan’s mouth opened.

Her attorney, seated in the gallery, looked as though he wished the floor would take him.

Finnley lowered himself back into the chair.

His legs felt weak.

He was still in jail clothes.

Still convicted.

Still not free.

Nothing had been solved.

But the courtroom had heard it.

For the first time, Reagan’s voice had betrayed her before Finnley’s could be dismissed.

The judge asked the investigator whether the contents of Storage Unit 108 had been fully cataloged.

The investigator said only, “Not all items are cleared for open discussion at this stage.”

That answer brought more whispers.

Finnley looked at the sealed folder.

What else was there?

Not just a letter.

Not just a key.

Something enough to make Reagan fight deputies in a courtroom.

Something enough to make a judge pause.

Something enough to touch the theft case that had sent him to prison.

Reagan was breathing hard now, eyes bright with panic.

Finnley looked at Camden’s portrait.

“Dad,” he whispered, too low for anyone else.

Then he looked back at Reagan.

“What did you hide from me?”

She did not answer.

Her silence was no longer power.

May you like

It was fear wearing lipstick.
