Chapter 9 - THE MAN IN THE CONTROL ROOM
The Bay Four footage was grainy and silent.
It did not show the figure touching the controls.
It showed him entering the room and leaving forty-two seconds later.
Daniel died during that interval.
Greg’s attorney argued that another employee could have worn the company jacket.
Employment records showed only Greg possessed access to the control-room key after the temporary contract ended.
The key had never been recovered.
Harper searched Greg’s truck again.
Inside a magnetic container beneath the chassis, investigators found old keys, copied employee badges, and a warehouse access card issued in Greg’s name.
The card’s electronic history had been deleted from the current system.
The insurance backup preserved it.
Greg entered Bay Four at 10:51 p.m.
Daniel died at 10:53.
The evidence supported a homicide charge, but prosecutors continued carefully. They needed to determine whether Greg deliberately activated the machine or entered after noticing the defect.
A surviving technician remembered Greg asking how to override the safety guard during maintenance.
“He said the automatic lock slowed repairs.”
The override required holding two switches simultaneously.
Daniel could not have activated it accidentally from the loading floor.
Someone inside the control room did.
Greg’s motive may have involved the inspection Daniel refused to sign. If Daniel reported the unauthorized repairs, Greg’s company would lose payment and face criminal investigation.
Four years later, Greg attempted to steal the settlement created by the death.
Rachel struggled with the possibility that she had shared a home with the man who killed Daniel.
“I let him sleep in our room.”
Emma heard her from the doorway.
“You didn’t know.”
Rachel looked at her daughter.
“You defended me.”
“I’m not saying it wasn’t your fault that you stayed.”
The child’s voice trembled.
“I’m saying you didn’t know about Dad.”
Rachel accepted the narrow mercy without asking for more.
At the church refuge, security increased after a suspicious car circled the block twice.
Police stopped it.
The driver was a freelance photographer hoping for a picture of Emma.
No connection to Greg existed.
Mike wanted the man arrested.
Harper explained that trespassing and harassment laws required specific conduct.
Mike clenched his jaw but stayed inside.
Emma watched him.
“You’re doing the breathing thing.”
“Pastor Eli taught me.”
“Does it work?”
“Not fast enough.”
She almost smiled.
The small moment mattered.
Fear had not vanished, but it no longer filled every room.
Greg’s jail calls became more agitated.
He accused Rachel of framing him with Daniel’s records. He insisted the warehouse death was an accident.
Then he called an unknown number and said:
“Move the blue bag before they search the old chapel.”
Harper recognized the phrase “old chapel.”
St. Matthew’s had operated from another building ten years earlier. Greg once attended its court-ordered recovery meetings after a theft conviction.
Pastor Eli remembered him.
“He came twice,” Eli said. “He watched people more than he listened.”
The old chapel had been closed for structural damage and used only for storage.
Police entered with a warrant.
In the basement, they found a blue canvas bag containing cash, forged identities, Rachel’s missing email passwords, and photographs of Emma taken outside school.
There were also printed records for several other women who attended St. Matthew’s refuge programs.
Greg had copied information while volunteering briefly at the church food pantry.
He had not built an organization.
He had built a list.
Vulnerable mothers.
Children.
Property records.
Insurance settlements.
Rachel may not have been the first family he targeted.
Inside the bag was a silver bracelet engraved with the name Lila.
Emma recognized it.
“Lila is in my class.”
Harper checked the school records.
Lila had been absent for four days.
Her family told teachers they were moving suddenly.
