Chapter 1 - Five Minutes Before ForeverFive minutes before her wedding, Amelia Hart was still trying to pin her veil.

The private dressing room at Bellrose Manor glowed beneath soft amber lights. White roses covered the vanity, a string quartet played faintly beyond the closed doors, and nearly two hundred guests waited inside the ceremony hall.
Amelia stood before the mirror in an ivory gown with fitted lace sleeves, staring at her own reflection while her hands trembled.
She had imagined this morning since Daniel Whitmore proposed beneath the lights of Boston Harbor. She had imagined her mother helping with the veil, Daniel waiting at the altar, and the two families finally becoming one.
But Laura had disappeared ten minutes earlier.
She said she needed air.
Amelia lifted her bouquet and stepped into the hallway to find her.
The corridor outside the ceremony space was empty except for a second dressing room at the far end. Its door was not fully closed.
A shadow moved inside.
Amelia walked toward it, careful not to crush the hem of her dress. She heard a woman inhale sharply. Then came the unmistakable sound of a kiss ending too late.
Amelia pushed open the door.
Her mother was pressed against the vanity.
Richard Whitmore—Daniel’s father—stood between her and the mirror.
Laura’s lipstick was smeared. Richard’s formal jacket hung open, and the white boutonniere pinned to his lapel had been crushed between their bodies. One hand remained at Laura’s waist.
For a moment, no one moved.
The wedding music continued beyond the wall as though nothing had changed.
Amelia’s bouquet lowered slowly.
“Mom… what are you doing with his father?”
Laura jerked backward so violently that her shoulder struck the vanity. A perfume bottle toppled and rolled across the polished surface.
Her eyes filled with horror.
“This was supposed to end before today.”
Richard stepped away, his face losing color. He looked toward the hallway, searching for witnesses or an escape.
“Nobody was supposed to know.”
Footsteps sounded behind Amelia.
Daniel arrived wearing his black tuxedo, one hand still adjusting his cuff. His expression began with concern.
“Amelia? The officiant said—”
Then he saw the room.
He saw Laura’s smeared lipstick.
His father’s ruined boutonniere.
The guilty distance neither adult had created quickly enough.
Daniel’s hand fell to his side.
He looked directly at Richard.
“Dad, you destroyed both families.”
Amelia could barely breathe.
She stared at the wedding ring already resting beneath her engagement diamond. They had exchanged it privately during the morning photography session, planning to repeat the moment at the altar.
The gold band now felt impossibly heavy.
She slid it from her finger.
“Amelia,” Daniel whispered.
She clenched the ring beside the bouquet.
Laura moved toward her.
“Please let me explain.”
Amelia stepped backward.
The unpinned veil slipped from her hair and fell onto the hallway carpet.
“No.”
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“I understand enough.”
Daniel reached for Amelia but stopped before touching her. His face carried the betrayal of a son and the terror of a groom watching his future disappear.
“Whatever they did,” he said, “it wasn’t us.”
Amelia looked at him.
She wanted to believe that.
She wanted to walk into the ceremony hall, stand beneath the roses, and pretend their parents’ affair belonged somewhere outside their marriage.
But secrets did not remain outside.
They entered through every unlocked door.
They sat at family dinners.
They smiled in photographs.
They stood close enough to touch during wedding rehearsals while everyone else mistook tension for dislike.
Amelia lifted her tear-filled eyes toward Daniel, then toward the room one final time.
“Then this wedding ends before they destroy mine.”
The string quartet finished its song.
A new piece began.
Inside the ceremony hall, the guests rose, believing the bride was about to appear.
Instead, Amelia turned away from the altar and walked toward the mansion’s rear staircase.
The bouquet slipped from her hand.
White flowers struck the floor and scattered beside her fallen veil.
Daniel remained in the hallway, caught between following the woman he loved and confronting the father who had betrayed him.
Laura covered her mouth and began sobbing.
Richard adjusted his jacket as though appearance could still save him.
It could not.
The dressing-room door remained open behind them.

And for the first time, the secret inside could no longer pretend it belonged only to two people.
👉 Amelia had called off the wedding, but Laura’s words revealed that the affair had begun long before anyone entered the dressing room.
