Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM

“Mom... I can’t be this man’s wife.”

Katherine whispered those words while lying on the bedroom floor, her wedding gown wrinkled beneath her, her breathing uneven, and fear filling her eyes.

Grace had waited years to see her only son get married.

But nothing could have prepared her for finding a bride who looked terrified less than an hour after saying her vows.

Earlier that evening, the family estate in Oakhaven Springs had been overflowing with celebration.

White flowers still scented the garden.

String lights glowed among the trees.

The last guests had only recently departed after praising what they called the perfect wedding.

Grace had been proud of Caleb all his life.

He earned a scholarship in civil engineering, built a successful career with a major construction company in Richmond, and grew into the kind of respectful, hardworking man every parent hoped to raise.

At least, that was what Grace had believed.

When Caleb introduced Katherine two years earlier, Grace welcomed her immediately.

Katherine never tried to impress anyone with expensive clothes or dramatic gestures. She arrived wearing a simple blouse, smiled shyly, and quietly helped wash dishes while everyone else chatted.

Over time, she became the daughter Grace never had.

That was why the scream froze Grace where she stood.

It came from the newlyweds’ bedroom with such raw desperation that she knew something had gone terribly wrong.

Robert sat upright in bed the instant he heard it, but Grace was already racing barefoot into the hallway.

“Did you hear that?” Robert asked.

“It was Katherine.”

Frank, Grace’s brother-in-law, was already hurrying upstairs after spending the night at the house following the wedding.

“What happened?”

Grace did not answer.

She reached the bedroom first and pounded on the door with both fists.

“Caleb! Katherine! Open the door!”

No one answered.

She knocked again, harder this time.

“Son, open the door!”

The silence behind the door only made everything worse.

There were no footsteps.

No voices.

No explanation.

Finally, Robert moved Grace aside and forced the door open.

The room looked nothing like the beginning of a wedding night.

The bed remained untouched.

The flower petals scattered across the sheets had not moved.

Two champagne glasses still sat completely full.

Katherine was curled against the wall, clutching her chest and shaking uncontrollably, while Caleb sat several feet away on the floor with his shirt partially unbuttoned, sweat covering his face, and an empty expression Grace had never seen before.

Grace rushed to Katherine and knelt beside her.

“My dear, what happened? Tell me what happened.”

Katherine instinctively pulled away.

“Don’t come near me... please...”

“It’s me, Grace. It’s Mom.”

Katherine slowly lifted her head.

Her lips trembled so violently she struggled to form the words.

“Mom... I can’t be his wife. This man... this man hates me.”

The room became completely silent.

Robert turned sharply toward his son.

“What did you do to her?”

Caleb opened his mouth but could not answer.

Instead, he broke into uncontrollable tears, crying with the helplessness of a frightened child rather than a newly married man.

“I... I didn’t mean for this to happen,” he finally whispered. “I never thought she’d scream like that.”

Grace stared at him in disbelief.

“What do you mean you didn’t mean to?”

Caleb covered his face with both hands.

“I just wanted her to be afraid.”

Katherine began crying again.

Frank quietly suggested taking her to one of the guest rooms, and Robert gently helped her to her feet.

Without looking back even once, Katherine walked out of the bedroom, her wedding dress trailing behind her across the hardwood floor.

Grace remained standing in front of her son.

“Caleb. Look at me.”

He kept staring at the floor.

“Mom... don’t ask me right now.”

“I’m asking you now.”

After several long seconds, Caleb finally raised his head.

His eyes were bloodshot, filled with both shame and anger.

“She had to pay.”

Grace felt the ground disappear beneath her.

“Pay for what?”

Caleb looked toward the doorway Katherine had just disappeared through before answering in a voice so cold it barely sounded like his own.

“For what she did to Beatrice.”

In that moment, Grace understood that the wedding she had spent years looking forward to had never truly been a celebration.

It had been a carefully planned trap hidden beneath flowers, music, and wedding vows.

And the truth behind it was only beginning to unfold.
