Chapter 3 - THE NEIGHBOR WHO REFUSED TO STAY QUIETJune Parker arrived at St. Agnes with Lily’s sneakers still wet from the club pool.
She was sixty-seven and lived across the road from the Mercer estate. Hannah knew her only as the retired teacher who brought Christmas cookies every December.
June had been watering plants when Claire’s car stopped outside her house.
Lily was curled in the back seat.
Her face was swollen. Her breathing sounded like air being pulled through a pinched straw.
Claire carried her to June’s porch.
“She needs to rest somewhere quiet,” Claire said.
“Where is her epinephrine?”
“Daniel has handled it.”
“Where is Daniel?”
“At the club.”
June demanded that Claire call an ambulance.
Claire refused.
She said an ambulance arriving at Evergreen Lake Club would cause a public scene and frighten the children. She promised Daniel would return after the board vote.
Then Claire drove away.
June called 911 herself, but Lily’s condition worsened so quickly that the dispatcher told her to begin driving toward the nearest emergency department while an ambulance met them on the road.
The ambulance never intercepted them.
Hospital records showed the dispatch was canceled four minutes later by someone claiming to be Lily’s father.
Daniel denied making the call.
June pulled her phone from her handbag.
“I recorded Claire because I knew no one would believe how calm she sounded.”
The recording began with June asking why Lily’s medication had not been used.
Claire answered:
“Mother said the injector could create evidence of a serious reaction.”
Hannah felt cold spread through her body.
“What evidence?”
June continued the recording.
Claire said:
“If the buyer sees a medical report connected to the kitchen, the sale is gone.”
June asked whether the sale mattered more than Lily.
Claire answered:
“You don’t understand what the club means to this family.”
Hannah stopped the recording.
“She chose a property sale over my daughter.”
June shook her head.
“Not only Claire.”
She had seen Daniel standing beside the car before it left the club. Lily reached toward him through the open door.
Daniel closed it.
Then he returned to the dinner pavilion.
Officer Keller sent the recording to detectives at Evergreen Lake Club.
Daniel was detained for questioning.
At the hospital, Lily’s breathing improved enough for doctors to lower the oxygen level. She remained exhausted, but her eyes stayed open.
Hannah asked whether she remembered June.
Lily nodded.
“Did Aunt Claire take your backpack?”
Another nod.
“Did Dad see you?”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“He told me to stop crying.”
Hannah pressed her forehead against her daughter’s hand.
The marriage had already been failing. Daniel accused Hannah of turning Lily’s allergy into the center of family life. He resented restaurant restrictions, emergency plans, and the constant need to check food labels.
He often said Hannah was teaching Lily to be afraid.
Now that belief had nearly killed her.
Dr. Ward brought the toxicology report.
Lily had received antihistamine, but the dose was unusually high. It explained why she became drowsy and less able to call for help.
“Who gave it to her?” Hannah asked.
Lily whispered:
“Grandma.”
Evelyn had poured liquid medicine into a cup of lemonade and told Lily it would fix everything without “making a dramatic ambulance scene.”
The medicine suppressed the rash temporarily.
It did nothing to stop her airway from closing.
Worse, the sedating effect made Lily appear calmer.
The family had mistaken silence for improvement.
Keller called from the club.
Police had unfolded the document Charles hid beneath his plate.
It was an emergency custody petition accusing Hannah of exaggerating Lily’s allergy and interfering with Daniel’s parental rights.
Daniel had signed it that afternoon.
