Chapter 6 - LUCAS’S FIRST LIELucas asked Rachel to hear everything before deciding whether he could remain near Maisie.
She did not promise.
Three months earlier, Lucas received a message directing him to the abandoned North Meridian warehouse. Nathan waited inside.
Lucas recognized him immediately despite the scar.
Nathan claimed the fire had been arranged after he discovered Warren’s illegal supply network. He escaped but stayed hidden because Warren threatened Rachel and Elaine.
“Why would our father threaten his own children?” Rachel asked.
“Nathan said Warren was protecting something larger than the hardware store.”
“What?”
“He wouldn’t tell me.”
Nathan wanted the sale completed before releasing the remaining evidence. He claimed the buyer’s money would fund compensation for families harmed through North Meridian.
“He wanted me to believe the crime was a rescue plan,” Lucas said.
“Did you?”
“For a while.”
Nathan instructed Lucas to keep Rachel away from the compliance audit. When Lucas refused, Nathan showed him photographs of Maisie at daycare and Rachel leaving work.
“He said he didn’t want anyone hurt.”
“Then why show you surveillance?”
“To prove he could reach us.”
Lucas agreed to delay Rachel’s investigation by hiding several invoices. He believed he was buying time to uncover Nathan’s real plan.
Instead, his interference convinced Warren that Lucas could be blamed if the illegal shipments surfaced.
“Did Nathan tell you about the birthday setup?”
“No.”
“Did you give him your jacket?”
“I left it in Warren’s office after our last meeting.”
“Did you give him your camera code?”
“No.”
“But he could have learned it from Warren.”
“Yes.”
Rachel looked through the glass toward Maisie’s room.
“You let my brother stand close to our daughter while pretending he was dead.”
“I never saw him near her.”
“You knew he was watching her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my parents were preparing forged papers.”
“I suspected.”
“And still you waited.”
“Yes.”
Lucas did not ask her to forgive him.
He gave Detective Cole Nathan’s contact number, meeting location, and every message he had preserved.
The number led to a prepaid phone discarded near the loading dock.
The warehouse was empty.
Inside, officers found photographs of Rachel, Lucas, Maisie, Tessa, Sophie, Elaine, and Warren arranged across a wall.
Lines connected each person to shares in Harrow Hardware.
Maisie’s photograph had a red circle around it.
Beneath the picture, Nathan had written:
MINOR BENEFICIARY—EMERGENCY LEVER
Rachel felt cold move through her.
Her daughter had not become involved because she happened to be at the party.
Nathan had identified her as a tool before the plan began.
Another note read:
Use L.W. access. Preserve N.H. separation.
Nathan intended to use Lucas’s credentials while keeping his own survival hidden.
Detectives found a burner phone containing one unsent message addressed to Elaine:
If Rachel returns early, move Maisie to the collection point. Do not improvise.
“What collection point?” Cole asked.
The store’s rear dumpster area connected to an alley where commercial waste trucks arrived every morning at 8:45.
Rachel found Maisie at 8:31.
The middle dumpster was scheduled to be emptied fourteen minutes later.
Elaine and Warren had not simply hidden the child.
They had placed her where she would disappear with the compacted waste.
Lucas left the room and vomited in a hospital trash can.
Rachel remained standing.
Her anger became quieter.
More dangerous.
If she had stopped for traffic, spoken longer with the bank teller, or searched the guest apartment for another five minutes, Maisie would have been inside the truck when it arrived.
Then Officer Cole received a call from the store.
The waste truck’s onboard camera had preserved footage from that morning.
A man stood beside the dumpster before Rachel reached the loading dock.
He wore Lucas’s jacket.
He lifted the lid.
Then he looked directly toward the truck camera.
The face belonged to Nathan.
But he was not putting Maisie inside.
