PART 7

“And while his pregnant wife slept in a freezing garage…” I said quietly, “…you called my grief inconvenient.”
Ryan’s face drained completely.
For the first time since Daniel died, nobody in that family had a response ready.
Then Chloe suddenly exploded.
“Oh my God, stop acting like you’re the only person who lost him!”
Her voice cracked across the driveway.
Tears streamed down her face now — real ones this time.
“You think this was easy for us?” she shouted. “Do you know what it was like after he died? Dad couldn’t work for months! Mom was falling apart! Everything in this house became miserable!”
I looked at her carefully.
Then I noticed something strange.
Colonel Hayes had gone completely still.
Not emotionally still.
Militarily still.
The kind of stillness that appears right before danger.
Chloe realized it too late.
Because she kept talking.
“And honestly?” she spat, “Daniel ruined this family long before he died.”
The driveway went silent again.
Hayes slowly turned toward her.
“What exactly do you mean by that, ma’am?”
Chloe froze.
My father immediately stepped in.
“That’s enough,” he barked.
Too fast.
Too nervous.
And suddenly something cold slid down my spine.
Because for nine months, every conversation about Daniel’s final mission had always ended the same way in this house.
Abruptly.
May you like
Uncomfortably.
Like everyone wanted it buried as quickly as possible.
