Chapter 8 - Peter’s hidden storage unit

The key from Peter’s camera bag opened a storage unit on the south side of Richmond.
Julia had driven past the facility hundreds of times without knowing her husband had rented a space there.
Detective Brooks entered first.
Inside were six cardboard boxes, a metal filing cabinet, an old laptop, and a locked cooler with no power.
Nothing looked dramatic.
That made it more frightening.
Peter had not created a panic room.
He had created an archive.
Julia opened the first box.
Voss clinic invoices.
Fertility consent forms.
Photographs of medical shipments.
A spreadsheet listing embryo identification numbers.
M-02 and M-03 appeared repeatedly.
Brooks examined the laptop.
“It’s encrypted.”
Julia tried an old family password.
Rejected.
She tried Clara’s birthday.
Rejected.
Then she remembered something Peter had said whenever she complained about his passwords.
“The truth is always the first thing you forget.”
She typed the date they had signed the embryo-destruction consent.
The laptop opened.
Folders filled the screen.
PROJECT KINSHIP.
VOSS.
CRANE.
MOORE.
Julia clicked the last.
A video appeared.
Peter sat inside his car.
The timestamp was eight days before his death.
“Julia,” he began, “if you’re watching this, I failed to fix something I should have told you years ago.”
Julia covered her mouth.
Peter continued.
“The embryos were not destroyed.”
She closed her eyes.
“I discovered the storage discrepancy after Clara turned four. Malcolm Voss told me it was a clerical error. I believed him until I found transfer records.”
He held up a document.
“M-03 left storage.”
Julia looked at Brooks.
Peter continued.
“I confronted Lydia Crane. She told me the embryo had been lost during transport.”
He shook his head.
“She lied.”
The video ended abruptly.
Another file began.
Peter was inside the same car three days later.
“I found the child.”
Julia stopped breathing.
“She is alive.”
Brooks leaned closer.
Peter continued.
“I don’t know the legal name. Voss calls her Legacy Three.”
No mention of Lucy.
Not yet.
“I also discovered something worse. They kept M-02 because the program needed a genetically related future host.”
Julia whispered, “Clara.”
Peter looked almost as though he could hear her.
“If they ever approach Clara through school medicine, pediatric research, or free health screenings, take her away immediately.”
Julia began crying.
He had tried to warn her.
But he died before he could.
A final folder was password protected.
Title:
IF LYDIA FINDS ME.
Brooks tried the destruction date.
Rejected.
Julia typed Peter’s birthday.
Rejected.
Then Clara’s.
Rejected.
She looked around the storage unit.
On a shelf sat an old photograph of Peter holding newborn Clara.
Written across the back:
Three made. One chosen. Two stolen.
Julia typed:
TWOSTOLEN.
The folder opened.
Inside were vehicle photographs.
Lydia Crane meeting Raymond Voss.
Lydia entering Rosewood.
A photograph of Peter’s own car raised on a mechanic’s lift.
The date was forty-eight hours before his fatal crash.
Brooks stared.
“Your husband’s accident may not have been an accident.”
Julia felt a terrible calm.
“I knew you were going to say that.”
A repair invoice named the mechanic.
He was still alive.
Police found him before noon.
He initially denied knowing Peter Moore.
Then Brooks showed him the photograph.
His hands began shaking.
“I didn’t know they were going to kill him.”
Julia sat in the observation room while Brooks questioned him.
“Who paid you?” Brooks asked.
“A woman.”
“Name.”
“Lydia.”
Julia closed her eyes.
The mechanic claimed Lydia paid him to damage a sensor in Peter’s steering system. He had been told the vehicle would fail inspection, frightening Peter into abandoning his investigation.
Instead, Peter lost control on Interstate 64.
“Did Lydia know what would happen?”
“I don’t know.”
Brooks did.
At minimum, Lydia had ordered sabotage.
Peter died because he was investigating the stolen embryos.
Back at St. Matthew’s, Clara listened as Julia told her only the part she needed to know.
“Your dad discovered people were doing something wrong.”
“Did they hurt him?”
Julia hesitated.
“Yes.”
Clara cried quietly.
“Because of me?”
“No. Because he tried to protect you.”
Clara looked toward the window.
“And the other embryo?”
“We’re still finding out.”
Detective Brooks called from Peter’s storage unit again.
They had discovered a hidden compartment behind the filing cabinet.
Inside were photographs of twelve children.
One was Lucy Crane.
One was Clara.
And one was Megan Foster.
The others were unknown.
Each photograph had been taken years apart.
But every child had the same code written on the back.
KINSHIP CANDIDATE.
Then Brooks found one final photograph.
Julia recognized the woman immediately.
It was herself.
Pregnant with Clara thirteen years earlier.
Someone had written across the back:
PRIMARY MATERNAL SOURCE.
Julia stared at the words.
Peter had not discovered a program that began after Clara was born.
