Chapter 7

Chloe tried to turn the crowd back.
That was what she had always done.
When truth threatened her, she looked for an audience softer than facts.
“You all know me,” she said, voice shaking.
“I would never hurt anyone.”
No one answered.
That was new too.
Silence had always protected Chloe before.
Now it surrounded her differently.
She turned toward her friends near the pool.
“Madison?”
Madison looked away.
“Kelsey?”
Kelsey stared at the stone deck.
Chloe’s face crumpled, but I knew the difference between shame and fear.
She was not sorry she hurt me.
She was terrified people could see it.
My mother stepped forward.
“Enough.”
The old word.
The family word.
Enough truth.
Enough discomfort.
Enough Maya.
I looked at her.
“No.”
She stopped.
I had never said no to her like that before.
Not in public.
Maybe not ever.
She whispered, “Maya, please.”
I said, “You made me cover my arms in July.”
Her face went pale.
“You told me not to wear my hair up.”
She covered her mouth.
“You asked me to skip Chloe’s dance recital because photographers would be there.”
Chloe said, “Mom was trying to protect you.”
I turned on her.
“No.”
“She was protecting you from guilt.”
Dad did not stop me.
That mattered.
I continued.
“You called me monster.”
My voice trembled now, but it did not break.
“You called me dramatic.”
“You told people I liked attention.”
“You let them think I was bitter because you were beautiful and I was damaged.”
Chloe’s face hardened suddenly.
There she was.
Beneath the tears.
“If you hated me so much, why did you save me?”
The cruelty of that question made the crowd inhale.
For a second, I could not speak.
Then I answered the only truth I had.
“Because you were my sister.”
Chloe looked away.
I stepped closer.
“And because I was eight.”
“I had not learned yet that love could be used against me.”
Dad lowered the folder.
My mother was sobbing now.
But I did not go to her.
For once, I stayed with myself.
The microphone felt heavy.
The scars across my back felt visible in a way that no longer belonged to humiliation.
Visible like testimony.
May you like
Visible like proof.
