PART 1
“On their wedding night, he locked the bedroom door, pulled out a whip, and handed her a list of rules—ten seconds later, he was face-down on the floor begging while the annulment papers slid into view.”
Audrey Vale was still wearing her wedding gown when her new husband locked the penthouse bedroom door.
The Chicago skyline glittered beyond the glass wall.
Champagne glasses sat untouched on the marble table.
Her tiara still pressed into her hair.
Dominic stood near the wardrobe in his tuxedo, smiling like the ceremony had been nothing but a transaction finally completed.
Then he pulled a folded paper from his jacket.
A riding crop rested near his hand on the Persian rug.
Audrey looked at it.
Then at him.
“What is that?”
Dominic unfolded the paper slowly.
“Rules.”
He spoke like he expected applause.
“Rule number one, Audrey—my word is absolute.”
Audrey’s face did not change.
“And if I refuse?”
Dominic smiled.
“You won’t.”
That was when Audrey understood he had waited until the door was locked because he thought marriage had made her trapped.
He stepped closer.
Audrey stepped back once.
Not from fear.
For space.
Dominic mistook it for weakness.
He reached for her wrist.
Ten seconds later, he was on the rug with his face turned sideways, his arm locked behind his back, and his expensive tuxedo twisted beneath him.
He gasped.
“Audrey!”
She kept one knee planted beside him, controlled and steady.
“No, Dominic.”
“I’m just making sure I don’t ruin this beautiful rug.”
The riding crop lay inches from his hand.
His phone lay near the bed.
The manila envelope she had hidden under the chair was now within reach.
Audrey dragged it closer and slid the annulment papers beside his face.
“All you have to do is sign.”
The private door opened.
Victoria Vale, Dominic’s mother, stepped into the room in a navy evening gown.
She expected a perfect wedding night.
Instead, she saw her son pinned face-down on the Persian rug, the bride calm above him, and annulment papers staring back from the floor.
“Dominic…”
Her voice broke.
“What on earth is happening in here?”
Audrey looked up.
Her expression was cold and clear.
“Your son confused a wedding vow with ownership.”
Dominic stopped struggling.
Because for the first time that night, he realized Audrey had not been surprised.
