Chapter 10 - the house in North Carolina

Claire wanted to go.

Federal agents refused.

The property might be dangerous.

She remained at the hospital with Noah while Reed’s team entered the North Carolina house.

No people.

But someone had lived there recently.

Fresh food.

Medication.

Clothing.

A laptop with its drive removed.

Photographs of Claire and Noah.

Recent photographs.

Noah walking into school.

Claire leaving work.

Their Christmas decorations.

Someone had been watching them.

Claire stared when she saw the pictures.

“If Ethan took those, why didn’t he come home?”

No answer.

Then investigators found a wall covered with Harborstone organizational charts.

Martin Vale at the top.

Executives below.

Judges.

Contractors.

Medical providers.

Shell companies.

Red lines connected dozens of people.

Ethan had continued the investigation.

One name was circled repeatedly:

MIRIAM VALE.

Claire frowned.

“Who is she?”

Martin Vale’s older sister.

Former federal prosecutor.

Officially retired fifteen years earlier.

No known role at Harborstone.

Yet Ethan’s notes called her:

ARCHITECT.

Claire felt cold.

Martin might not be the top.

Ethan’s last handwritten note:

Martin controls the company.

Miriam controls the exits.

What did that mean?

Another phrase:

E.C. compromised, but not by choice.

Evelyn Cross may have been under pressure too.

Then Reed found a locked drawer.

Inside:

One envelope.

CLAIRE.

No forensic risk indicated.

Claire was allowed to receive a scanned copy.

Ethan’s handwriting.

Claire,

If this reaches you, then the wall between us has finally cracked.

She stopped reading.

For four years she had imagined what she would say if Ethan somehow came back.

She never imagined receiving a letter written while he was hiding.

I learned you and Noah were alive eleven months after the crash.

Claire closed her eyes.

Eleven months.

Almost a year.

I tried to come home.

Then someone sent me photographs of Noah at preschool with a message: return and he disappears.

Claire covered her mouth.

I believed them.

I still do.

She whispered:

“Why not go to police?”

The letter answered.

I did.

The first investigator I contacted reported me to Miriam Vale within twenty-four hours.

That explained Claire’s fear that law enforcement was compromised.

Ethan had tried.

Someone betrayed him.

The next line:

Evelyn helped me disappear again. Do not hate her for that.

Claire’s anger softened slightly.

Evelyn had not kept Ethan from his family for power.

She may have kept him alive.

Then:

There is one thing I have never been able to prove.

Noah’s phantom account was not created to steal reimbursement money.

Claire frowned.

What else?

The money was camouflage.

The letter continued:

Someone needed Noah to exist in Harborstone’s emergency-placement system under multiple identities.

Claire’s blood turned cold.

“Why?”

The final page was missing.

Torn cleanly.

Federal agents searched the house.

No continuation.

But on the wall, beside Noah’s photograph, Ethan had written:

IF CLAIRE LEARNS WHY, SHE WILL RUN.

Claire stared.

“Run from whom?”

Reed looked toward the chart.

Possibly Miriam Vale.

Possibly someone else.

Then a call came from the hospital.

Noah had remembered something about Gavin’s car.

A woman’s photograph was taped inside the glove compartment.

Noah thought she looked like “Mom but older.”

Claire’s mother had died when Claire was eighteen.

Claire asked Noah to describe the photograph.

Gray eyes.

Dark blond hair.

Silver necklace shaped like a bird.

Claire went still.

Her mother, Caroline Ward, had worn a silver swallow necklace every day.

“Was it Grandma Caroline?”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

He pointed when Reed showed him corporate photographs.

Miriam Vale.

Claire stared.

Miriam Vale looked remarkably like Claire’s late mother.

Far more than coincidence should allow.

👉 Noah’s description revealed that Harborstone’s hidden architect Miriam Vale bore a striking resemblance to Claire’s supposedly unrelated late mother, opening an entirely new family mystery.
