Chapter 9 - the woman who watched Noah before he was born

Why would Evelyn Cross monitor Claire during pregnancy?

Claire had never met her.

Or believed she hadn’t.

Agent Reed showed Claire an old Harborstone gala photograph.

Claire was twenty-seven.

Pregnant with Noah.

Standing beside Ethan.

Three people behind them:

Martin Vale.

Evelyn Cross.

And Dr. Samuel Harris, Harborstone’s medical director.

Claire frowned.

“That was a charity dinner.”

“Do you remember Evelyn?”

“No.”

“Look closer.”

Another photograph.

Evelyn speaking directly to Claire.

Claire stared.

Memory returned slowly.

“She asked when I was due.”

“What else?”

“She said Ethan talked about the baby constantly.”

Claire had forgotten the interaction completely.

Evelyn already knew Ethan well enough to discuss him.

Ethan had never told Claire.

The protected-status file explained part of it.

Evelyn and Ethan were already suspicious of Vale.

Claire’s pregnancy increased the stakes.

They worried Vale would use family leverage.

Evelyn created a security file around Claire and the unborn child.

Not to exploit them.

To protect them.

But someone later repurposed that same file.

Noah’s identity became an ideal phantom account because his real details already existed inside Harborstone’s secure system.

Claire asked:

“Who accessed it?”

Hundreds of logins.

But the first unauthorized duplication happened four days after Ethan’s supposed death.

Whoever thought Ethan was gone immediately began monetizing Noah’s identity.

Claire’s anger hardened.

“That was deliberate.”

Reed nodded.

Then they found who approved the first duplicated case.

Dr. Samuel Harris.

Not related to Elias Harris at the ER.

Samuel Harris had left Harborstone three years earlier.

Current location unknown.

Martin Vale blamed him publicly when the federal investigation intensified.

But the approval log may have been forged.

The system was full of stolen credentials.

Claire looked exhausted.

“How do we know anything is real?”

Reed answered:

“Patterns.”

One pattern stood out.

Every major phantom-account approval eventually routed through a private trust called:

CROSS CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION.

Claire stared.

“Cross?”

Evelyn’s surname.

Was Evelyn stealing too?

Financial analysis suggested otherwise.

The Cross Foundation received suspicious transfers—

then returned almost identical amounts to government agencies anonymously.

It looked less like laundering.

More like someone quietly attempting to reverse theft without revealing themselves.

Evelyn may have spent years tracing and refunding stolen money.

Reed whispered:

“She’s been building a shadow audit.”

Claire understood.

Evelyn disappeared, then fought Harborstone from outside.

Perhaps Ethan joined her.

Maybe that was why neither could safely return.

Then Gavin’s phone records revealed one final recent call from Evelyn.

Agents enhanced the audio from a cloud backup.

Evelyn’s voice.

Older.

Controlled.

“Gavin, listen to me. Bring me the index. Do not touch Claire. Do not involve Noah.”

Gavin:

“I need money.”

“You need a lawyer.”

“I did everything you asked.”

“No. I asked you to copy records. You kidnapped a woman.”

“She was going to federal agents.”

“Good.”

Gavin went silent.

Evelyn continued:

“Whatever you think you are doing for me, stop.”

Claire stared.

Evelyn had not directed the violence.

She had been trying to stop her son.

Then Gavin said:

“Vale says Ethan is alive.”

Evelyn’s voice changed.

“Martin does not know where Ethan is.”

“You do.”

Silence.

“Mom.”

Another pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“I know where he was.”

The recording ended.

Claire stood.

“When?”

The call occurred six days before Noah arrived at the hospital.

Evelyn knew a recent location connected to Ethan.

The federal team traced references in card 07.

A rural property in North Carolina.

Registered to an educational nonprofit.

Security footage was requested.

One image arrived.

A man exiting the property three months earlier.

Bearded.

Thinner.

Older.

But Claire recognized him instantly.

Ethan.

Alive.

👉 A recent security image appeared to confirm Ethan Bennett was still alive only three months earlier, turning Claire’s four years of mourning into a search for her missing husband.
