Chapter 24 - Marcus asks for one night
The overnight request came eight months after his release.
Marcus had:
Completed counseling.
Maintained employment.
Paid debts.
Complied with probation.
Followed contact rules.
No financial manipulation.
No attempts to challenge guardianship.
Leo wanted it.
I still said no.
My lawyer asked:
“Why?”
“I don’t trust him.”
“With Leo’s safety?”
Pause.
“With judgment.”
“Current evidence?”
I hated that phrase.
Dr. Porter recommended a trial evening visit until 10 p.m. before overnight.

First late visit.
Marcus cooked spaghetti.

Still asleep.
I did not answer.
At 8:
Leo called.
“Can I stay for pancakes?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“You sound weird.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
“I’m adjusting.”
He laughed.
A child should not have to reassure me either.
I ended call.
At noon Marcus returned him.
On time.
No speech.
Then he said:
“Thank you.”
“I did it for Leo.”
“I know.”
Good.
Then probation officer recommended early termination after statutory minimum? We can keep until full 2 years; story timeframe only maybe 1 year after death, so not yet. No need.
One legal loose end remained.
Marcus’s conviction created an employment licensing question.
His project-manager job did not require a professional license, but the acquiring company had bonded commercial work.
Insurer reviewed.
They allowed continued employment but prohibited Marcus from financial-signatory authority on client trust accounts.
Reasonable.
He accepted.
No career miracle.
No ruin.
Then Rachel’s house trust review.
First Ridge asked whether keeping home remained prudent.
Maintenance costs.
Taxes.
Leo emotional benefit.
We needed decide:
