Chapter 5 - Evelyn comes back
Evelyn returned voluntarily.
She arrived at the police station with an attorney.
No dramatic chase.
No attempt to flee the state.
Her explanation was simple.
“I was frightened.”
Peter almost laughed when Detective Morgan repeated it.
Fear again.
Evelyn claimed Thomas Vane told her Sterling would destroy Michael’s reputation if she challenged the accident.
“They said he had falsified inspection reports.”
“He was exposing falsified reports,” Peter said.
“I didn’t know that then.”
“You had the blue file.”
“Later.”
“Drew says Vane visited your house.”
Evelyn’s eyes shifted.
“My grandson is six.”
“He crawled seven blocks with a broken leg. Don’t use his age to erase his memory.”
Evelyn refused to answer.
Her attorney intervened.
Then Morgan asked about Anna.
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Did you tell her the children would be hurt if she returned?”
“Never.”
“Did you forge her signature on the settlement?”
“No.”
“Did Samuel Price?”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Small.
But Peter saw it.
Price was involved.
Morgan asked:
“Why did Anna disappear?”
Evelyn looked toward Peter.
“Because she killed Michael.”
Silence.
Peter stood.
“What?”
Evelyn claimed Anna tampered with Michael’s safety harness to frighten him into leaving Sterling.
Peter stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“They were fighting.”
“About?”
“Money.”
Evelyn said Anna wanted Michael to quit.
He refused.
She allegedly threatened to “make work impossible.”
After Michael died, Evelyn found a cut section on his harness.
She blamed Anna.
“Did police see it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Thomas said it would destroy the children.”
Peter stared at her.
“You believed a company executive over your daughter-in-law?”
“Yes.”
“Then you took money from the same company.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Morgan asked:
“Where is the harness?”
“Gone.”
Convenient.
Then Anna contacted police.
She had seen news reports about the children’s rescue.
She called from a domestic-violence shelter three counties away.
Alive.
Terrified.
Willing to return if placed under protection.
Peter cried when he heard her voice.
“I’m sorry.”
Anna whispered:
“You didn’t know.”
“I should’ve known.”
“You were fighting Evelyn too.”
Anna returned under police escort.
The reunion with Drew and Lily happened privately.
No cameras.
No spectacle.
Drew refused to let go of her for almost ten minutes.
Lily screamed “Mommy!” until her voice broke.
Peter stood outside the room.
Then Anna came to him.
“She told you I abandoned them?”
“Yes.”
“She told everyone.”
“What happened?”
Anna explained.
Three weeks after Michael’s funeral, she found the blue file.
Michael had hidden it in their garage.
She confronted Evelyn because one document showed Evelyn had communicated with Thomas Vane before the settlement.
Evelyn panicked.
Samuel Price arrived that same night.
“He said I was having a breakdown.”
Peter’s face tightened.
“He did the same thing to me.”
Anna nodded.
“They told me if I kept accusing Evelyn and Sterling, they’d petition to remove the kids.”
“They did anyway.”
“Yes.”
Then someone broke into Anna’s apartment.
Nothing stolen.
A photograph of Drew and Lily sleeping had been left on her bed.
Anna fled.
She sent Peter an email.
He never received it.
Peter checked his old account with police.
The message existed in server archives.
It had been automatically forwarded to an unknown address and deleted.
Who had access to Peter’s email settings?
Years earlier, Evelyn helped him recover his password.
Another piece.
Anna continued.
“I stayed away because every time I tried to come back, somebody knew.”
“How?”
“I thought Evelyn was tracking me.”
“Was she?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Anna revealed the biggest reason she risked returning to the basement.
“Samuel Price called me.”
Peter stared.
“What?”
“He said Drew was hurt.”
“Why would Price help you?”
“I don’t think he was helping.”
Anna believed Price wanted the second copy of Michael’s evidence.
He said if she came alone, she could see the children.
At the house, she realized it was a trap.
Evelyn demanded the copy.
Anna lied and said she no longer had it.
Then she slipped the note to Drew.
“What second copy?” Peter asked.
Anna looked directly at him.
“I gave it to Michael’s lawyer before I disappeared.”
“Who?”
“David Mercer.”
Detective Morgan searched.
David Mercer had been Michael’s employment attorney.
He died eight months ago.
Heart attack.
His law office had closed.
But his final active case file was still held by another firm.
