Chapter 8 - Robert Calder’s final year
Peter did not want his father to be guilty.
That did not mean he wanted him protected.
Robert’s final-year journals were found in a locked desk Evelyn had never emptied.
Most entries were ordinary.
Doctor appointments.
Bills.
Weather.
Then one line:
MICHAEL FOUND OUT ABOUT WESTBRIDGE. TOM WANTS ME TO FIX IT.
Tom.
Thomas Vane.
Two days later:
I TOLD TOM I WILL NOT TOUCH MY SON.
Peter exhaled.
Not proof of innocence.
But important.
Next:
SAM THINKS MICHAEL CAN BE DISCREETLY DISCREDITED.
Sam.
Samuel Price.
Peter stared.
Robert knew Price was being used to undermine Michael.
He did not stop it publicly.
Then:
EVELYN SAYS IF MICHAEL DESTROYS STERLING, WE ALL LOSE EVERYTHING.
Peter closed his eyes.
Evelyn had known.
More than she admitted.
Another entry, night before Michael died:
TOM CAME HERE. EVELYN LET HIM IN.
Peter’s pulse quickened.
Vane visited the Calder home.
Then:
I HEARD THEM ARGUE ABOUT THE RELEASE. EVELYN SAID ANNA WILL NEVER SIGN.
The settlement release existed before Michael died?
Detective Morgan leaned closer.
If true, Sterling had prepared the family settlement in advance.
Why would they need a death release before a death?
Maybe because Michael threatened legal action.
A release could settle whistleblower claims.
Still suspicious.
Next line:
TOM SAID THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO GET GUARDIAN CONSENT.
Guardian consent?
Michael was an adult.
Then Peter remembered.
At the time Michael had temporarily designated Evelyn as backup financial agent during a medical procedure years earlier.
Perhaps Vane planned to use old authority.
Robert’s journal continued:
I TOOK THE WRENCH.
Peter froze.
There it was.
“I took the wrench.”
His father had the tool.
Next line:
I PUT IT IN MY TRUNK SO TOM COULD NOT USE IT.
Peter exhaled.
Maybe Robert removed it protectively.
Then the next entry:
THIS MORNING IT WAS GONE.
Silence.
Robert discovered the wrench missing before Michael died.
Did he warn him?
Apparently not.
Why?
Final entry that day:
I CALLED EVELYN. SHE SAID STOP BEING PARANOID.
Peter stared.
Same word used against everyone.
Paranoid.
Then Michael died.
Robert’s journal for the following week contained only one sentence repeated across three pages:
I SHOULD HAVE CALLED HIM.
Peter cried quietly.
His father may not have killed Michael.
But he suspected danger.
And did nothing.
The pattern hurt because Peter understood it.
Robert survived life by avoiding confrontation.
As a father, that cowardice became harm.
He did not lock Peter in the pantry.
He knew Evelyn did.
He forced Peter to deny it.
He did not necessarily sabotage Michael’s railing.
He saw warning signs.
He stayed quiet.
He did not injure Drew.
He taught Evelyn for decades that family problems stayed inside family walls.
Silence became inheritance.
Then the journal produced one name nobody expected.
I THINK LAURA TOOK THE WRENCH.
Peter frowned.
“Laura?”
Detective Morgan searched Robert’s contacts.
Laura Vane.
Thomas Vane’s wife.
Formerly Laura Calder.
Peter stared.
“Calder?”
She was Robert’s daughter from a relationship before he married Evelyn.
Peter had never known.
A half sister.
Robert had paid child support privately.
Laura later married Thomas Vane.
That meant the executive investigating and threatening Michael was married to Michael’s half sister.
Another hidden family connection.
Peter felt exhausted.
“Did Michael know?”
Morgan found a letter.
Yes.
Michael discovered Laura’s identity six months before his death.
He confronted Robert.
That was part of why he distrusted everyone.
Laura Vane had access to the Calder home.
She knew Robert.
She knew Evelyn.
She knew Sterling.
And Robert suspected she took the maintenance wrench from his trunk.
Police located Laura.
She had separated from Thomas three years earlier.
She agreed to speak.
Her first statement stunned Peter.
“I took the wrench.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas asked me to.”
“Did you know what he intended?”
“No.”
“What did he tell you?”
“That Michael stole company equipment.”
“So you stole it from Robert?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do with it?”
“I gave it to Thomas.”
Peter stared.
The tool used to loosen Michael’s railing passed from Robert’s trunk to Laura’s hands to Thomas Vane.
Laura began crying.
“I didn’t know.”
Detective Morgan asked:
“When did you realize?”
“The funeral.”
“Why?”

“Thomas told me to forget I ever touched it.”
