Chapter 6

Dr. Shah spoke quietly to one of the nurses.
No test results were shared.
No prognosis.
No final condition.
Just instructions moving with urgent professionalism around Chloe’s bed.
Evelyn wanted to ask every question at once.
Will she wake up?
Did she hear me?
How long?
How bad?
But Grant was still in the room, and Evelyn would not give him her fear to use.
So she stayed still.
That became her discipline.
Stillness beside the bed.
Stillness beneath the camera.
Stillness while Grant tried to build new exits out of old lies.
“She ran,” he said suddenly.
Evelyn turned her head.
“What?”
“She ran from the house. She was upset. I followed her. She tripped.”
Dr. Shah looked at him.
“You said stairs.”
Grant’s eyes snapped to the doctor.
“What?”
“Earlier. You said she fell down the stairs.”
Grant’s lips parted.
Evelyn did not speak.
She let the inconsistency live.
Security stood on either side of him, close enough to stop movement, not touching more than necessary now that he had stilled.
Grant swallowed.
“There were stairs outside.”
“At the house?” Dr. Shah asked.
Grant’s face hardened.
“I’m not giving a statement to you.”
Evelyn looked at the camera again.
“You already are.”
His eyes flicked upward.
The red light kept glowing.
That tiny light seemed to bother him more than the security officers.
Because men like Grant can fight people.
They cannot intimidate a recording.
The nurse holding Chloe’s phone shifted slightly.
Grant saw the movement and forced his face into concern.
“Can I see her phone? She might have medical information on it.”
Evelyn looked at him coldly.
“Now it has medical information?”
“I’m trying to help.”
“You lunged for it.”
“I panicked.”
“For the phone.”
He said nothing.
Dr. Shah resumed his work, checking Chloe with careful hands.
Evelyn turned back to her daughter.
Chloe’s lashes rested against bruised skin.
The sight threatened to split Evelyn open.
She leaned close enough to speak softly without disturbing care.
“I’m here, Chloe.”
Grant scoffed under his breath.
“She can’t hear you.”
Evelyn looked up slowly.
“Then why are you afraid of what she recorded?”
Grant’s face drained again.
May you like
This time, no one missed it.
