Chapter 9

A second nurse entered with a sealed tray and paused beside Evelyn.

Not for permission.

For awareness.

Evelyn stepped aside, never leaving Chloe’s reach.

The trauma team continued without spectacle.

No one announced a diagnosis.

No one revealed test results.

No one said whether Chloe would wake soon.

That unknown sat over Evelyn like a weight pressing on her lungs.

Grant watched the nurses move, frustration returning as he realized medical care continued without his authority.

“I have rights,” he said.

Evelyn looked at him.

“So does she.”

“She’s a minor.”

“She is a patient.”

“She is mine.”

The word escaped before he could polish it.

Mine.

Security heard it.

Dr. Shah heard it.

The nurse holding the phone at the doorway heard it.

Evelyn heard it most of all.

She turned fully toward him.

“No, Grant.”

His eyes burned.

“She would still be with her real family if you hadn’t interfered.”

Evelyn’s voice stayed even.

“Your version of family put her in this bed.”

He jerked against the officers again.

They tightened their hold.

Not excessive.

Enough.

The camera watched from above.

Grant looked up at it, then down at Evelyn, hatred replacing panic.

“You think that little red light saves you?”

Evelyn did not blink.

“No. It saves your words.”

He laughed under his breath.

“You don’t know what she did.”

Evelyn’s heart stopped for one beat.

There it was.

The pivot.

A child unconscious on a hospital bed, and he was still building a case against her.

“What did she do?” Evelyn asked.

Grant’s lips parted.

Then he stopped.

He had remembered.

Camera.

Phone.

Witnesses.

Security.

Doctors.

Evelyn saw the calculation.

She stepped closer.

“Say it.”

He looked at Chloe.

For the first time, fear and anger twisted together into something ugly enough to reveal him.

“She shouldn’t have kept files,” he said.

The room froze.

No one played the phone.

No one opened the files.

No one explained what they contained.

Grant realized what he had said almost instantly.

His face lost color.

Evelyn’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“What files?”

He said nothing.

The red recording light kept glowing.

Read Chapter 10 👉 Because Grant did not reveal the recordings, but he admitted Chloe had files before anyone told him what was on her phone.
