Chapter 8 - The Smartphone on the Tray

The smartphone sat face down on the tray.
Lena wanted to reach for it.
Her fingers moved, then stopped.
Pain ran through her shoulder.
Dr. Reed picked it up instead.
“Do you want me to place it where you can see?”
Lena nodded.
He turned the screen toward her without opening anything further.
The interface remained unreadable.
No text.
No titles.
No visible proof.
Only the suggestion of something captured.
Something waiting.
Lena stared at the black glass and saw her own reflection overlaid with the hospital ceiling.
She looked unrecognizable.
Not only because of the bruises or the gown or the loose hair.
Because her eyes were different.
Fear was still there.
But confusion was burning away.
Vanessa would not be shown.
The fall would not be recreated.
The older injuries would not be explained.
But Lena knew one thing clearly: the story her family told about her had started to crack.
Dr. Reed placed the phone into another clear medical bag, careful not to disturb it.
Lena watched every motion.
Evidence again.
Her life had become a collection of items other people handled gently because someone else had not.
A sealed tablet.
A bagged phone.
MRI images.
A hospital bracelet.
Dr. Shaw returned to the second screen and highlighted the area near the metallic fragment without readable markings.
Lena recoiled against the pillows.
The shape reflected in her eyes.
Tiny.
Bright.
Impossible.
The officer stepped closer, just inside the room now.
He did not crowd her.
He stood near the door, silent, recording, ready.
Lena looked at him.
Then at the doctors.
Then at the scan.
The questions rose like floodwater.
Who?
When?
How?
Why?
No answers came.

Only the monitor’s quickened rhythm.
