Chapter 9 - I Have Never Been Shot

The sentence stayed in the room after Lena said it.
“I have never been shot.”
No one contradicted her.
No one reassured her too quickly.
That was the terrifying part.
Dr. Reed looked at the metallic fragment again.
Dr. Shaw sealed another digital copy record into the evidence process without exposing any details on screen.
The officer’s face remained controlled, but his eyes had changed.
Silent reaction.
Professional alarm.
A recognition that the case had widened beyond a staircase injury.
Lena gripped Dr. Reed’s sleeve again.
This time, she did not apologize.
Her hand shook, but her voice sharpened.
“Tell me it’s explainable.”
Dr. Reed’s face softened.
“I cannot tell you something I don’t know.”
Honesty hurt.
But it did not insult her.
Lena nodded once, though tears spilled down her face.
Her left foot still did not move beneath the cream blanket.
The MRI screens glowed on the wall.
The older fractures remained visible but unexplained.
The metal fragment stayed bright near her spine.
No one named who caused anything.
No one explained previous falls.
No one described the fragment’s origin.
No one said Vanessa would be arrested.
No one revealed what the investigation would find.
The mystery stayed intact, horrible and living.
Dr. Shaw looked at Dr. Reed.
Their exchanged expression was furious and deeply disturbed.
Lena saw it.
The officer saw it.
And in that moment, Lena understood the most frightening truth so far.
The doctors were not only afraid of what they had found.
May you like
They were afraid of what had been missed before she ever arrived in this room.
