Chapter 4

The warrant came together because Ryan made one arrogant mistake.

He unplugged the indoor camera but forgot it had already uploaded motion clips.

Emily installed that camera after Linda claimed Emily was “sleepwalking” and might hurt herself during pregnancy.

That was the excuse.

The truth was simpler.

Emily wanted proof.

The camera faced the bedroom door.

Not the bed.

Not private spaces.

Just the door.

For three nights, it recorded Linda entering the room without knocking.

Ryan standing in the hallway while Emily asked to leave.

Linda taking Emily’s phone.

Ryan saying, “Your father is not coming here like some hero.”

That line later became very useful.

On the fourth night, the camera captured Linda dragging a chair in front of the door from the outside.

Then Ryan unplugged it.

He looked directly at the lens before the screen went dark.

Like he was smarter than the machine.

He was not.

The last clip uploaded automatically.

Captain Hale had it before I reached my car.

By then, Emily’s safety app had also saved partial audio from her broken call.

Ryan’s voice.

Linda’s voice.

Emily saying, “Please, I need the hospital.”

Linda saying, “Pregnancy is not an emergency just because you want attention.”

That sentence made Hale go silent.

When he spoke again, he was no longer asking.

He was moving.

“We have enough for entry and emergency protective action.”

“What about the arrest warrant?”

“The confinement and evidence tampering are already there.”

“And assault?”

“We need visual confirmation or her statement.”

“You’ll have both.”

I drove faster than I should have.

But not recklessly.

A reckless father would not help Emily.

A controlled one might.

Elena called me while I was on the road.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“James.”

“Stay near the phone.”

“She’s my daughter too.”

That nearly broke me.

“I know.”

“Then don’t tell me to sit still.”

I pulled into a gas station lot and stopped long enough to breathe.

“Elena, if Ryan gets bail, if Linda calls, if anyone comes to the house, I need you safe.”

She was silent.

Then she understood.

“I’ll call Julia.”

Julia was Emily’s older cousin and a deputy sheriff in DuPage County.

Good.

“Lock the doors,” I said.

Elena’s voice trembled.

“Bring our baby home.”

I looked at the road ahead.

“I will.”

But when I reached the apartment, I realized something worse.

Emily had not been waiting to be rescued.

She had been fighting alone for hours.
