Chapter 5

The apartment door opened only after Captain Hale announced the warrant three times.

Ryan tried delay first.

That was always his instinct.

Make people wait.

Make them explain.

Make authority feel rude for arriving.

He opened the door with his hair messy and his face arranged into confusion.

“Captain Hale?”

His eyes moved past Hale to me.

Then to the two military police officers behind him.

Then back to me.

“Colonel Bennett, what is this?”

I did not answer.

Hale did.

“Step aside.”

Ryan forced a laugh.

“My wife is sleeping.”

From inside the apartment, Emily made a sound.

Not loud.

Not even a scream.

But I knew it.

A father knows the sound his child makes when she is trying not to call for him because calling might make it worse.

I moved.

Hale blocked me with one arm.

Not disrespectfully.

Correctly.

“Sir.”

That one word reminded me.

Procedure first.

So the case survives.

Hale stepped in.

The first officer moved left.

The second moved toward the hallway.

Linda appeared in the bedroom doorway wearing a cream robe and pearls.

At 2:12 a.m.

Pearls.

That detail told me she had expected confrontation and dressed for superiority.

She lifted her chin.

“You cannot come in here.”

Hale held up the warrant.

“We can.”

Ryan looked toward the bedroom.

His eyes warned someone.

Too late.

The second officer entered the room first.

His voice changed immediately.

“Captain.”

That was when I saw Emily.

Curled on the bed.

Nightgown pale against bruised skin.

Seven months pregnant.

Trying to sit up and failing.

I do not remember crossing the room.

I remember kneeling.

I remember saying her name.

I remember her grabbing my uniform like she was falling off the earth.

“Dad…”

I lifted her carefully.

She was lighter than she should have been.

Pregnancy should have made her heavy in my arms.

Instead, she felt exhausted.

Starved of sleep.

Starved of safety.

She whispered the sentence that ended Ryan’s performance.

“Dad… Ryan and Linda did this.”

Ryan said, “She’s confused. Pregnancy made her unstable.”

Emily recoiled so violently I nearly lost my grip.

That movement convicted him more deeply than any argument.

She was not reacting to a sentence.

May you like

She was reacting to a weapon he had used before.
