Part 3

PART 3
Emily and Daniel left the ballroom through the garden doors.
The night air was cold against Emily’s bare shoulders.
Her veil moved in the wind.
Behind them, the reception lights glowed like a party still pretending to exist.
They walked to the stone fountain without speaking.
This was where they had planned to take sunset photos.
Now Emily sat on the edge in her wedding dress and stared at her hands.
Daniel stood a few feet away.
He wanted to hold her.
He also knew the wrong comfort could feel like another trap.
Emily finally spoke.
“Our parents ruined our wedding.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
She looked up.
“Do they ruin us too?”
He had no answer ready.
That was the first honest thing he gave her.
“I don’t know.”
Her eyes filled.
“I hate that answer.”
“I do too.”
Inside the ballroom, Margaret had taken a seat near the cake table.
She looked exhausted, not victorious.
Richard stood across from her, stripped of dignity but still searching for excuses.
Diane sat alone, shaking.
Then she asked for Emily.
Margaret looked at her.
“No.”
Diane lifted her tearful face.
“I need to tell her something.”
Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“You have told her enough.”
Diane whispered, “Not this.”
Richard turned sharply.
“Diane.”
Margaret saw the fear in his face.
That fear was different.
Not shame.
Panic.
She stood.
“What else?”
Diane looked at Richard.
“I’m done protecting you.”
He stepped toward her.
“Don’t.”
Margaret raised her voice.
“Daniel.”
Outside, Daniel heard his name and turned.
Emily followed him back into the ballroom, dread growing with each step.
Diane stood when her daughter entered.
Her face was ruined with tears.
“Emily, I need to tell you something before you hear it from anyone else.”
Emily gripped Daniel’s hand.
“What?”
Diane looked at Richard.
“The affair ended once.”
Richard’s face went white.
Diane continued.
“Because I thought I was pregnant.”
The room collapsed into silence again.
Emily stared.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Margaret whispered, “What?”
Diane spoke quickly, as if speed could make it less brutal.
“It was two years ago.”
“I was late.”
“I panicked.”
“Richard arranged a private appointment.”
Emily’s voice was almost soundless.
“Were you?”
Diane shook her head.
“No.”
She pressed a hand over her mouth.
“But for three weeks, we thought…”
Daniel stepped back from her.
“That what?”
Diane looked at him with unbearable guilt.
“That the child could have been his.”
Margaret turned toward Richard.
“You let me comfort you through your so-called business stress while you thought you had gotten her pregnant?”
Richard had no defense left.
Only silence.
Emily looked at her mother like she was disappearing.
“I don’t know who you are.”
Diane began to cry harder.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Emily’s voice sharpened.
“You brought me dress shopping.”
“You cried when I put on my veil.”
“You told me Dad would have loved Daniel.”
Her voice broke.
“And all that time you were sleeping with Daniel’s father.”
Diane reached for her.
Emily stepped back.
“Don’t.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You were willing to let me marry into this without knowing any of it.”
Richard whispered, “I didn’t want to lose you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You used my wedding to keep your affair hidden.”
Richard tried to speak.
Daniel cut him off.
“You don’t get to call that love.”
The guests who remained stood frozen at the edge of the room.
No one whispered now.
The scandal had become too painful to enjoy.
Margaret turned to Emily and Daniel.
“You two need to leave.”
Emily looked at her.
Margaret’s eyes softened.
“Not together if you cannot.”
“Not apart if you do not want.”
“But away from us.”
That was the first protective thing any parent had said all night.
Emily broke down.
Daniel opened his arms.
This time, she stepped into them.
Not as a bride choosing a groom.
As two wounded people holding each other in the wreckage adults had made.
Across the room, Diane watched and covered her mouth.
Richard reached for Margaret.
She stepped away.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
May you like
“The next time you touch my hand will be in a lawyer’s office.”
Continue to PART 4 to see the wedding officially stop, Margaret confront Diane alone, and Emily and Daniel decide whether their love can survive their parents’ betrayal.
