Part 4

PART 4
The official announcement was made at 10:17 p.m.
The band had packed up.
The cake remained uncut.
The flowers were beginning to droop under the warm ballroom lights.
Daniel stood beside Emily near the microphone, both of them pale and exhausted.
He held the microphone first.
“Thank you for coming.”
His voice shook.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily touched his arm.
He lowered the microphone and handed it to her.
She looked out at the faces of relatives, friends, coworkers, and distant guests who had arrived expecting romance and left carrying scandal.
“This wedding cannot continue tonight.”
No one seemed surprised.
That made it hurt more.
Emily swallowed.
“Daniel and I need time.”
“We ask everyone to respect that.”
She almost stopped.
Then she looked toward Diane and Richard.
Her voice changed.
“And we ask that no one turn our pain into entertainment.”
The room lowered its eyes.
One by one, guests began leaving.
Some hugged Emily.
Some hugged Daniel.
Most did not know what to say.
Good.
Some wounds do not need sentences from strangers.
After the room emptied, Margaret found Diane in the bridal suite.
Diane sat on a velvet chair beneath a mirror surrounded by lights.
Her cheek was still red from the slap.
Margaret stood in the doorway.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Diane said, “I deserved it.”
Margaret’s face remained cold.
“That does not make me proud I did it.”
Diane looked up.
That surprised her.
Margaret entered and closed the door.
“I did not come to apologize.”
Diane nodded.
“I know.”
“I came to ask you something without a ballroom listening.”
Diane braced herself.
“Did you love him?”
Diane closed her eyes.
There was no answer that would not hurt.
“Yes.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“But not enough to leave the shadows?”
Diane whispered, “I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Being alone.”
Margaret laughed softly.
It was not cruel.
It was broken.
“So you borrowed my husband.”
Diane cried silently.
Margaret looked at her.
“I spent three years wondering why Richard stopped looking at me when I spoke.”
Her voice trembled.
“I thought I had become boring.”
“Old.”
“Invisible.”
Diane covered her face.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
Margaret’s voice hardened.
“You are sorry you had to see my face when I found out.”
Diane dropped her hands.
The truth landed.
Margaret turned toward the mirror.
In its reflection, she saw both women.
A betrayed wife.
A guilty widow.
Two mothers who had helped destroy their children’s wedding.
“I will divorce him.”
Diane whispered, “I’m not asking for him.”
Margaret faced her.
“You do not get to ask for anything.”
In the garden, Emily and Daniel sat side by side on a stone bench.
They had taken off the public symbols first.
Her veil.
His boutonniere.
Then their rings.
They placed the rings in Emily’s small white clutch.
Daniel stared at the ground.
“I still love you.”
Emily nodded.
“I still love you too.”
“But I can’t tell whether looking at you will always make me see them.”
He closed his eyes.
“I understand.”
She turned toward him.
“Do you?”
“My father made your mother part of our story before we had a choice.”
His voice broke.
“I hate him for that.”
Emily’s tears returned.
“I hate her too.”
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
“I hate what she did.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s more generous than I feel.”
Emily leaned back.
“Not generous.”
“Tired.”
They sat in silence.
Then Daniel asked, “Do we cancel everything?”
Emily looked at the dark windows of the ballroom.
“I think tonight was not a wedding.”
“What was it?”
“A warning.”
He nodded slowly.
“To build something without lies.”
She looked at him.
“If we build anything.”
That hurt him.
But he nodded again.
“If.”
For the first time all night, they made a decision without parents, guests, or secrets.
They would leave separately.
They would meet one week later.
No promises.
No rings.
Only truth.
Inside, Margaret walked out of the bridal suite and passed Richard in the hall.
He stood waiting, eyes red.
“Margaret, please.”
She stopped.
“You loved her?”
Richard could not answer.
Margaret nodded.
“That is your last answer as my husband.”
May you like
Then she walked away.
Continue to PART 5 to see the aftermath, the divorce, Diane’s public shame, and whether Emily and Daniel can choose each other after the wedding that exposed everyone.
