Chapter 1

Aunt Claims There Is No Will Before a Bank Call Confirms Grandma’s Hidden Vault Box.

The hand-painted ceramic bowl hit the hardwood floor and shattered between Nora Bennett and her aunt Brenda.

Painted fragments scattered under Nora’s black heels.

The bowl had belonged to Grandma Shirley.

Nora had seen it every Christmas, filled with peppermints on the hallway table beneath the wooden staircase.

Now it lay broken beside estate-sale stickers, stacked china, and strangers carrying her grandmother’s life toward a moving truck outside in the snow.

Brenda’s hand clamped around Nora’s upper arm.

“There’s no will. Put that down.”

Nora stared at the pieces.

She had buried her grandmother that morning.

By afternoon, Brenda had opened the historic Boston Edison house, marked furniture with neon price stickers, and started selling dishes before the flowers on Shirley’s grave had frozen.

Snow blew through the open front door.

Uncle Walter stood near the entrance with one hand pressed to his cheek.

Evan, Nora’s nineteen-year-old cousin, stood by the staircase clutching a brass candlestick like he had forgotten why he picked it up.

Nora slowly looked up.

Her grief hardened.

She pulled her arm free.

“Grandma left one at the bank.”

Brenda stepped closer, blocking the estate-sale table.

“Grief makes people remember things wrong.”

Nora reached into her coat pocket and removed her phone.

“Then let the bank say it.”

She placed the call on speaker beside Grandma Shirley’s stacked china.

Brenda’s confident face flickered.

A mover slowly lowered the lamp in his hands.

Keyboard sounds came through the phone.

Then the bank manager’s voice changed.

Professional became careful.

Careful became serious.

“Ms. Bennett… there is a box.”

Brenda’s face lost color.

Her hand tightened around the yellow legal pad.

Every relative turned toward her.

Nora stood beside the broken bowl, phone on speaker, and understood something cold and terrible.

Her aunt had not rushed the estate sale because there was no will.

She had rushed because she was afraid of what Grandma Shirley had left behind.
