Chapter 6

The house reacted before Brenda did.
Walter whispered, “A box?”
Evan lowered the candlestick onto the staircase step as if it had become too heavy.
The estate worker by the table took one full step back from Shirley’s china.
Outside, the moving truck idled in the snow.
Brenda’s hand tightened around the yellow legal pad until the paper bent.
Nora kept her eyes on her aunt.
“What kind of box?” Nora asked.
Gregory hesitated.
“I can confirm there is an active safe-deposit record connected to Shirley Bennett. I cannot disclose contents over the phone.”
Brenda recovered enough to speak.
“This is Brenda Bennett. I am Shirley’s daughter and executor of informal family affairs.”
Gregory paused.
“Informal family affairs is not a bank designation, ma’am.”
Evan made a small sound that might have been a laugh if the room had been less tense.
Brenda shot him a look.
Nora spoke before Brenda could continue.
“Is there an authorized access instruction?”
“I will need to verify certain documents before saying more.”
Brenda stepped closer to the phone.
“There are no documents.”
Gregory’s voice became even more careful.
“I did not say that.”
The words landed heavily.
Nora looked at Brenda’s yellow legal pad.
“What were you writing?”
Brenda held it against her chest.
“Inventory.”
“Of things you had no authority to sell?”
“You don’t know that.”
“No,” Nora said. “But the bank might.”
Walter finally moved away from the door.
“Brenda, stop the movers.”
Brenda turned to him.
“You stay out of this.”
He looked older suddenly, but also less afraid.
“No. Shirley deserved better than this.”
For the first time, Brenda looked surrounded.
Not by enemies.
May you like
By witnesses.
