Chapter 8

Hannah stopped crying before Trisha did anything useful.

That hurt in a way I did not expect.

Children adapt too quickly when adults disappoint them.

She wiped her face with the back of her hand and whispered, “Mom, can we go inside?”

I knelt.

“Yes.”

Her eyes moved to the jar.

I followed her gaze.

Trisha was still holding it.

I stood again.

“Hannah will have her savings back before we leave this yard.”

Trisha laughed shakily.

“You’re acting like I robbed a bank.”

“No.”

“You robbed your niece.”

Several relatives looked away.

Good.

Let discomfort do its work.

Bethany stepped over and took the paper plate from Hannah’s chair.

A small kindness.

Then my uncle closed the lid of the cooler.

Another small movement.

The party was ending without anyone announcing it.

Trisha noticed.

That frightened her more than my words.

People like my sister could survive conflict if everyone stayed in formation.

But the formation was breaking.

Patricia sat down slowly in a lawn chair.

Robert stood beside her, silent again, but not quite the same silence as before.

Neil moved closer to Hannah and handed her a napkin.

“Hey, kiddo,” he said gently. “Remember the pony you liked at the fair?”

She nodded.

“What was his name?”

“Biscuit,” she whispered.

“Terrible horse name.”

Despite everything, Hannah almost smiled.

That little almost-smile saved me from doing something louder.

Trisha’s phone buzzed again.

She flinched.

Maybe another notice.

Maybe the school portal.

Maybe a failed supply payment.

Maybe just a text.

The camera would not have shown the words.

But I saw the truth move through her body.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her mouth opened slightly.

She finally understood the tuition account had not been a threat.

It had been real.

A support system she never owned.
