Chapter 6

Emma wanted to stand up and run to Michael.
Not to confront him.
To see his face when she asked one question.
How long have you known?
But Mr. Collins seemed to sense the impulse.
“Ms. Reynolds, I strongly advise you not to contact him from this office.”
Her head snapped up.
“I’m not a child.”
“No. You are the beneficiary of a restricted inheritance trust that someone attempted to access less than twenty-four hours ago.”
That stopped her.
Mr. Collins continued, gentler now.
“Anything you say to him may change what he does next.”
Emma looked at the bank card.
The dusty card suddenly felt heavier than plastic.
It felt like evidence.
“What happens now?”
“We secure the account from further unauthorized inquiry. We notify internal fraud review. We verify your identity formally. We do not transfer funds today. We do not disclose unnecessary details.”
“Do I get to see the folder?”
“Parts of it, once compliance authorizes release.”
Emma leaned forward.
“Is my father’s signature in there?”
Mr. Collins looked pained.
“There are signatures. I cannot characterize all of them yet.”
All of them.
Emma noticed the phrase.
“Michael’s?”
The manager’s silence was careful.
Too careful.
Emma’s mouth went dry.
“Was Michael’s name anywhere near this before yesterday?”
Mr. Collins removed his glasses and set them on the desk.
“I cannot answer that yet.”
Yet.
That word became a doorway.
Emma stared at it.
The bank employees outside continued working quietly, unaware or pretending to be.
Inside the office, Emma felt the first edge of determination cut through panic.
Michael had thrown her out because he thought she had nothing.
May you like
Or because he knew she had everything and needed her too broken to ask why.
