Chapter 8

The access-request form lay on the desk between them.
Mr. Collins had covered most of it with a blank sheet of paper, leaving only the blurred attached photo visible enough for Emma to recognize.
Michael.
His face.
His posture.
His confident expression.
Not a desperate husband asking for help.
A man certain he could explain his way past a gate.
Emma stared until the image blurred behind tears.
“He was here yesterday,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
“Before he threw me out?”
Mr. Collins hesitated.
“The timestamp indicates the request was made yesterday afternoon.”
Emma’s heart beat hard.
Michael had thrown her out that night.
After the bank.
After being denied.
After learning there was something he could not reach.
The sequence rearranged everything.
Maybe the divorce papers were not the beginning.
Maybe they were pressure.
Maybe abandoning her was not cruelty alone.
Maybe it was strategy.
Break her.
Isolate her.
Make her desperate.
Make her sign.
Make her believe she had nothing.
Emma covered her mouth.
Mr. Collins pushed a box of tissues toward her but did not speak.
Good.
She did not want comfort yet.
Comfort might make her soft before she understood the danger.
“What did he bring?” she asked.
“Identification. Marriage documentation. A written statement.”
“From me?”
Mr. Collins’s face tightened.
“Purporting to describe your condition and his authority to assist.”
Emma’s stomach turned.
“Did I sign it?”
“I cannot discuss the signature analysis yet.”
Yet again.
Emma leaned back.
The office lights reflected off the glass walls.
Outside, customers stood in line, debit cards in hand, living ordinary financial lives.

Inside, Emma realized her husband might have forged her helplessness before throwing her away.
