Chapter 1 - The Divorce Papers Beside the Triplets

Billionaire husband signs divorce papers beside his critically ill wife and triplets before one hidden clause destroys his confidence.

Grant Holloway bent beside the hospital bed with a blue pen in his hand and no warmth in his face.

His wife lay beneath fluorescent lights in a pink hospital gown, pale and shaking, an identification bracelet loose around her wrist.

Three newborn babies rested against her chest, wrapped safely in white blankets, tiny pastel caps shifting with their quiet movements.

She had nearly died bringing them into the world.

Grant was signing divorce papers before the monitors had stopped frightening everyone in the room.

The doctor rushed close, blonde ponytail disheveled, teal scrubs wrinkled from hours beside the ICU.

She stared directly into Grant’s face.

“Her heart stopped twice. She may not survive.”

Grant did not look at the babies.

He did not look at his wife.

He finished his signature with a violent stroke and shoved the clipboard toward the elderly attorney.

“How fast can we finalize this?”

The attorney’s face tightened behind rectangular glasses.

Even he looked disturbed.

Grant’s wife heard every word.

Her tears fell silently as she tightened both arms around the triplets, carefully supporting their tiny bodies against her chest.

One baby began crying softly.

She forced herself upright just enough to meet Grant’s eyes.

“Grant… look at your children.”

Grant turned toward the bed.

For one brief second, the room waited for fatherhood to reach him.

It did not.

He looked from the newborns to his wife with cold irritation.

“I am no longer responsible for any of you.”

The doctor’s mouth opened in horror.

The attorney lowered his eyes to the papers.

Then his hand stiffened.

He had seen something.

A clause.

A line.

A consequence Grant had not bothered to read.

The wife noticed.

Her sobbing stopped.

She looked back at Grant, tearful but suddenly terrifyingly calm.

“Then you should have read what divorce activates.”

Grant’s confidence cracked.

And the room went silent.
