Chapter 3 - The Attorney Reads Again

The attorney’s name was Mr. Whitcomb.

He had represented the Holloway family for decades.

He had drawn up mergers, trusts, partnership agreements, private settlements, property shields, emergency clauses, prenuptial schedules, and documents designed to make wealthy men feel safe.

Grant trusted him because Grant trusted paper more than people.

But Mr. Whitcomb had not looked safe after reading the signed divorce pages.

He looked older.

His silver hair caught the fluorescent lights as he adjusted his glasses and turned one sheet back.

Then another.

Then one more.

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Why are you rereading it?”

Mr. Whitcomb swallowed.

The doctor stepped closer to the wife and babies, placing herself between Grant and the bed without touching him.

Grant noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is this? Some moral performance?”

The doctor’s face twisted with disgust.

“She almost died.”

Grant lifted his chin.

“And I almost lost a corporation because of this family circus.”

The wife closed her eyes.

Not from weakness this time.

From recognition.

There it was.

The truth beneath the suit.

The triplets were not his miracle.

They were interruption.

Expense.

Image risk.

Complication.

The doctor’s hands shook, but she stayed professional.

Mr. Whitcomb finally looked up.

“Mr. Holloway, did you review the marital trust addendum before signing?”

Grant’s face sharpened.

“What addendum?”

The room changed.

The wife opened her eyes.

The attorney immediately regretted the question, but it had already escaped.

Grant took one step toward him.

“What addendum?”

Mr. Whitcomb looked down.

The answer was in the papers.

But the story would not reveal it yet.

No trust clause.

No financial consequence.

No final downfall.

Only Grant’s sudden panic as he realized something existed beyond his control.

His wife’s voice came softly from the bed.

“You didn’t read it.”

Grant turned toward her.

Her face was still pale.

Her body was still weak.

The babies still needed her careful arms.

But her eyes no longer looked abandoned.

They looked awake.
