Chapter 4

Leo found the recording because he missed his father’s voice.
That was all.
No investigation.
No dramatic search.
Just a grieving eight-year-old boy curled on Thomas’s side of the bed, holding the phone I had not been brave enough to unlock.
I was in the bathroom trying to make my face acceptable for the funeral.
Trying to become a widow other people could stand to look at.
Then Leo called, “Mom?”
His voice was different.
Not scared.
Still.
I came out and found him sitting with the phone in his lap.
On the screen was a saved audio file.
Claire — if needed.
My stomach tightened.
“Where did you find that?”
“In Dad’s notes app.”
He looked up at me.
“It has your name.”
I sat beside him.
For a moment, I could not touch the phone.
It felt like touching Thomas’s hand and not finding warmth.
Leo whispered, “Can we hear him?”
I should have said yes.
I should have played it in that room, privately, safely, before Victoria ever got near us.
But grief makes simple things impossible.
I pressed play.
Thomas’s voice came through the speaker.
“If anything happens to me, Victoria—”
I stopped it immediately.
Leo looked at me.
“Grandma?”
My heart began beating too fast.
I did not know what came next.
I only knew Thomas had spoken his mother’s name like a warning.
I told Leo we would listen after the funeral.
He nodded, but he did not hand me the phone.
“Can I keep it?”
I hesitated.
Then said yes.
That was the decision that changed everything.
At the chapel, Victoria tried to take Thomas’s phone from him twice.
First near the guest book.
Then beside the casket.
“Leo, sweetheart, Grandma should hold that.”
Leo shook his head.
“It’s Dad’s.”
Her smile tightened.
“I know. That’s why I should keep it safe.”
He stepped behind me.
I noticed then.
Not fear exactly.
Recognition.
Leo had heard something in that first line.
So had I.
During the service, Victoria sat in the front row, dry-eyed and upright.
I cried silently beside Leo.
When the final hymn ended, I thought we might survive the day.
Then Victoria stood near the casket and turned toward me.
That was when she chose cruelty over mourning.

And Leo chose his father’s voice over silence.
