Chapter 6

I moved before I thought.

One second, Leo was standing alone with the phone raised.

The next, he was behind me, my arm locked across his chest, my body between him and Victoria.

She stopped inches away.

Her hand hovered in the air.

Her face had gone bloodless beneath the chapel lights.

The recording still played faintly from Leo’s phone, but his thumb had slipped against the screen when I pulled him back.

Thomas’s voice became muffled.

Not gone.

Waiting.

Victoria recovered first.

Of course she did.

She always recovered first.

“Claire,” she said sharply, “give me the phone.”

No one moved.

Not even Beatrice.

I looked around the chapel.

At the relatives who had judged me.

At the military families who had come to honor Thomas.

At the folded flag.

At the portrait.

At my son.

Then I said, “No.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“That is my son’s property.”

I held Leo closer.

“It is Leo’s father’s phone.”

“And I am his mother.”

“I am his widow.”

The word widow nearly broke me.

But I stayed standing.

Victoria turned toward the mourners.

“This woman is using a grieving child to attack me.”

That might have worked before.

Before the recording.

Before the lunge.

Before Thomas’s voice said her name like evidence.

Beatrice whispered, “Victoria, what is on it?”

Victoria turned on her.

“Be quiet.”

That was the first time I saw Beatrice afraid of her sister.

Not loyal.

Afraid.

A retired sergeant named Paul Ellis stepped forward from the second row.

He had served with Thomas.

His voice was low.

“Mrs. Morgan, step away from the boy.”

Victoria stared at him.

The chapel shifted then.

Subtly.

People moved closer to me and Leo.

Away from Victoria.

Not enough to accuse.

Enough to stop her.

Leo was crying silently against my back.

I took the phone gently from his hands.

I did not press play again.

Not there.

Not yet.

Because Thomas had wanted me to hear it.

And if the recording was what Victoria feared, then the next person to hear it should not be a chapel full of gossip.

May you like

It should be someone with authority.
