Chapter 3

Tessa Lane entered the story wearing flowers.
That was how I remembered her.
Pale floral dresses.
Soft blonde hair.
A voice designed to make men feel protective.
She owned a lifestyle business called Lane & Wild, selling luxury retreat packages, organic skincare, and curated “country living experiences” to women who had never touched actual mud.
It looked successful online.
Everything looks successful online.
Behind the filtered orchard photos and linen table settings, the business was drowning.
Vendor lawsuits.
Late rent.
Unpaid staff.
A failed expansion into wellness retreats.
Brandon met her at a fundraising event and immediately began calling her “visionary.”
That was Brandon’s favorite word for people whose bad decisions he wanted to finance with someone else’s money.
The first time he brought Tessa to the farmhouse, she walked through it like she was mentally changing the curtains.
“This place would be perfect for branded retreats,” she said.
I answered, “It is my home.”
She smiled.
“Of course.”
But her eyes had already moved to the barn.
The orchard.
The guest cottages.
The gravel circle where cars could arrive for events.
Brandon poured wine on the porch and said, “Clara never uses the property to its full potential.”
I looked at him.
“I live here.”
“That’s not potential. That’s sentiment.”
Grandma’s old dog, Henry, was asleep under the porch table.
I remember thinking that if Henry had liked Brandon, I might have doubted myself less.
He did not.
After that visit, Tessa began calling me about “partnership opportunities.”
Then investors called.
Then a real-estate broker “mistakenly” asked if I was ready to review the purchase structure.
I forwarded everything to Rebecca.
She sent one letter.
No sale authority exists.
No listing is authorized.
No third-party negotiations are permitted.
The calls stopped.
For a while.
Then Brandon disappeared for six weeks.
No texts.
No visits.
No fake concern.
That silence should have comforted me.
Instead, I installed a new gate camera, reviewed all county property alerts, and asked Rebecca to monitor filings.
Because my grandmother had taught me something else.
When a selfish man goes quiet, he is often not finished.
