Chapter 15 - the first Lily

Caroline found Rachel alive.
The bullet had passed through her side without striking a major organ, but she was losing blood quickly. Pierce applied pressure while Donnelly called for a surgical team.
“Ethan,” Rachel gasped. “Find Ethan.”
Caroline followed Bell’s trail through the maintenance passage.
The tracking signal had vanished from his abandoned tablet, but small drops of blood marked the floor where Pierce had struck him.
She reached the circular nursery and heard her own voice singing from the cassette player.
For eleven years, Voss and Bell had preserved that recording.
They had played it for Emily.
They had transformed Caroline’s love into part of an experiment.
The laboratory elevator doors were closing.
Caroline forced her arm between them.
The doors reopened.
LEVEL SIX glowed on the panel.
She descended.
The underground chamber was larger than Northstar House. Transparent cribs extended beneath white lights, each containing an infant with fair skin and a thin pink blanket.
Emily stood beside Ethan at the nearest row.
Lily remained in her arms.
Caroline ran to them.
“Are you hurt?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Mommy?”
“She’s alive. Dr. Pierce is helping her.”
He closed his eyes in relief.
Caroline looked at the cribs.
“How many?”
Emily had counted the rows.
“Forty-eight.”
A medical screen above each infant displayed genetic information. Dates showed that the children had been born over several years.
Some were older than Lily.
Some only days old.
Every file used the designation C-7.
“They replicated Nora’s embryo,” Caroline whispered.
Emily pointed toward the far wall.
“Not exactly.”
A genealogy diagram showed a central genetic source connected to dozens of modified embryos.
At the center was a photograph of a young woman.
Not Nora Bell.
Caroline.
Her hospital records had listed blood draws during pregnancy and after Emily’s birth. Bell’s program had stolen more than her daughter.
It had stolen her reproductive cells.
A file opened when Caroline approached.
PRIMARY MATERNAL SOURCE: CAROLINE BENNETT.
SECONDARY PATERNAL SOURCE: CHARLES BELL.
Caroline stumbled backward.
Lily was genetically connected to both of them.
Bell had not merely called the baby his granddaughter as a form of ownership.
Biologically, she was his daughter.
And Caroline’s.
Emily read the screen.
“That makes Lily…”
“My biological child,” Caroline whispered.
Ethan tightened his hold on the pink blanket.
“She’s Rachel’s baby.”
Caroline looked at him.
“Yes.”
The truth of genetics did not erase the woman who had fed Lily, protected her, and sent Ethan barefoot through a blizzard to save her.
Caroline touched the crib rail.
“She belongs to herself.”
Applause echoed across the chamber.
Dr. Bell emerged from behind the central laboratory console.
Blood darkened his mouth, but he still held a gun.
“You learned faster than Voss.”
Caroline moved between him and the children.
“You created babies using my stolen cells.”
“You possessed the immune profile I needed. Nora carried the first successful embryo.”
“The first?”
Bell looked toward Lily.
“The child you call Lily is the seventh viable subject.”
Ethan stared at the rows.
“Then why do they all have her name?”
“They do not have names.”
“They do now,” Ethan said.
Bell smiled faintly.
“You would name forty-eight children?”
“Yes.”
“Names will not protect them from what is coming.”
Caroline looked toward the exit.
“State police control the hospital.”
“State police control the floors they know exist.”
Bell pressed a remote.
Steel barriers descended over the elevators.
A second countdown appeared on every screen.
FACILITY SEPARATION: 09:59.
“What does separation mean?” Emily asked.
Bell answered calmly.
“This laboratory will detach from the hospital’s foundation and enter the old mining tunnels beneath Millstone.”
Caroline stared at him.
The underground facility was mobile.
Prepared to disappear.
Bell gestured toward Lily.
“Give me the original subject, and I will allow Ethan and Emily to return upstairs.”
“No,” Ethan said.
Caroline looked at the ventilation system, the laboratory doors, and the controls beside Bell.
She could not overpower him before the facility moved.
Emily leaned close to her.
“The hummingbird.”
“What?”
“The cribs have hummingbirds beneath them.”
Caroline looked down.
A silver hummingbird had been engraved into each base.
The symbol was not merely connected to her daughter. It was an access mark tied to Caroline’s biological profile.
She pressed her hummingbird pin against the nearest crib.
A control interface illuminated.
MATERNAL OVERRIDE RECOGNIZED.
Bell’s expression changed.
“Remove your hand.”
Caroline pressed harder.
All forty-eight cribs unlocked.
Emergency alarms sounded.
Ethan opened the nearest one.
Emily lifted another baby.
Bell raised his gun.
Before he could fire, Lily screamed.
Every monitor in the chamber went black.
The facility stopped moving.
Bell stared at the central console.
“What did she do?”
Lily’s tracking implant glowed beneath her ankle.
A new signal spread across the screens.
C-7 PRIMARY CONSCIOUSNESS DETECTED.
Caroline looked at the ten-month-old baby.
That was impossible.
The system displayed neural patterns far too complex for an infant.
A woman’s voice came through the speakers.
“Nora Bell recovery protocol activated.”
Bell’s gun lowered.
His face emptied of color.
“Nora is dead.”
The voice answered.
“My body died.”
Lily stopped crying.
Her eyes remained fixed on Bell.
All forty-eight infants turned their heads toward him in perfect synchronization.
The chamber lights changed from white to red.
External control transferred.
Across the main screen appeared a live image of Nora Bell—not as she had looked during pregnancy, but older, scarred, and sitting inside another underground facility.
She was alive.
Behind her stood hundreds of women holding children in pink blankets.
Nora looked directly into the camera.
“Caroline, take Ethan, Emily, and the baby away from Charles.”
Bell stepped toward the screen.
“Where are you?”
Nora ignored him.
“The child you call Lily is not the original C-7.”
Caroline pulled the baby closer.
“Then who is she?”
Nora’s expression filled with fear.
“She is the key that woke the others.”
A violent impact shook the chamber.
Something struck the steel doors from the mining tunnel outside.
Then again.
And again.
Bell backed away.
“No. They were never supposed to reach this site.”
Ethan held Lily against his chest as the laboratory doors began bending inward.
Through the widening gap came the sound of children whispering in unison.
“We found our sister.”
