Chapter 8 - the road beneath the blizzard

The ambulance struck the sheriff’s barricade at thirty miles per hour.
A wooden sawhorse shattered across the hood.
Sheriff Rusk jumped aside and fired.
The rear window cracked.
Ethan threw himself over Lily.
Pierce pulled both children to the floor while Caroline fought the steering wheel.
The ambulance skidded onto the west service road, its tires struggling for traction.
A patrol vehicle followed.
Red lights flashed through the snow.
“Faster!” Ethan cried.
“I’m trying.”
Caroline could barely see the road. The storm erased everything beyond the headlights.
Pierce pressed gauze against Donnelly’s head wound while monitoring Lily.
The baby had begun to whimper from hunger.
“We need to stop within twenty minutes,” he said. “Her temperature is dropping again.”
“We stop, Rusk catches us.”
A second vehicle appeared behind the patrol car.
Caleb’s dark SUV.
Ethan saw it through the rear window.
“He always finds us.”
Caroline gripped the wheel.
“Not tonight.”
The radio crackled.
“Caroline, take the next right,” Detective Ortiz said. “There’s a maintenance road leading to the old river bridge.”
A narrow turn appeared beneath the snow.
Caroline nearly missed it.
The ambulance left the paved road and descended between trees. Rusk followed, but Caleb’s heavier SUV slid sideways and struck a ditch.
Ethan watched the vehicle disappear.
“He’ll get out.”
“We’ll be gone.”
The maintenance road ended at an iron bridge stretching across a frozen river.
A red door stood inside the bridge’s control cabin.
Ethan sat upright.
“The red door.”
Ortiz’s voice came through the radio.
“Ethan, now you can use the words.”
The boy looked at Caroline.
“Mommy said only if we saw the river.”
“You see it.”
He climbed into the passenger seat and pointed toward the cabin.
“Stop there.”
Caroline parked beside the red door.
Rusk’s lights appeared between the trees.
Pierce lifted Lily while Caroline helped Ethan through the snow.
The boy reached the door and knocked three times.
“Northstar falls before morning,” he said.
A lock clicked.
Detective Lena Ortiz opened the door.
She was in her early forties, wearing a heavy coat over plain clothes. A handgun rested at her side.
“Inside.”
The control cabin contained a desk, emergency generator, first-aid supplies, and a radio powerful enough to reach the state network.
Ortiz closed the door and lowered metal shutters.
“How did my mother know this place?” Ethan asked.
“I met her here two weeks ago.”
“You said she called six hours ago.”
“She did. Before that, she gave me evidence.”
Ortiz looked at Caroline.
“I tried to obtain a warrant against Voss and the Hollis Foundation. Sheriff Rusk informed them before the judge reviewed it.”
A vehicle stopped outside.
Rusk’s voice came through a loudspeaker.
“Detective Ortiz, you are harboring kidnapped children.”
Ortiz ignored him.
Pierce placed Lily on the cabin desk and prepared formula.
Caroline checked Donnelly.
His breathing had become shallow.
“We need a trauma center.”
Ortiz activated the state radio.
“This is Detective Lena Ortiz requesting immediate tactical and medical response to the Old Mill River Bridge.”
A dispatcher answered.
Before Ortiz could continue, the radio went dead.
Rusk had cut the external antenna.
A shotgun blast struck the shutter.
Ethan flinched.
Ortiz opened a floor compartment.
A narrow ladder descended beneath the cabin.
“Rachel showed me this tunnel.”
“Where does it lead?” Caroline asked.
“Under the bridge to the north bank.”
“Can we move Donnelly?”
“We have no choice.”
Pierce secured Lily against his chest in a medical wrap. Caroline supported Ethan while Ortiz lowered Donnelly on an emergency harness.
The tunnel was narrow, wet, and freezing.
Above them, Rusk broke through the red door.
They reached the far side moments before his flashlight appeared behind them.
Ortiz led the group into the woods.
A snowmobile waited beneath a camouflage cover, but it could carry only two people.
“We split up,” Ortiz said. “Pierce takes Lily and Donnelly to the ranger station. Caroline and I take Ethan toward Morrow Road.”
Ethan grabbed Lily’s blanket.
“No.”
“Ethan—”
“I don’t leave her.”
Pierce knelt.
“The ranger station has heat, medicine, and a working radio. I will protect her.”
“You promised I could stay.”
“I promised you would not be separated without knowing where she was going.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
Caroline held his face gently.
“Your mother may still be alive. You know how to find her.”
The boy looked toward Lily.
Pierce placed the baby’s tiny hand against his finger.
“She needs you to find Rachel.”
Ethan finally nodded.
Pierce drove away on the snowmobile with Lily secured against his chest and Donnelly on the rear rescue sled.
Caroline, Ortiz, and Ethan moved north through the forest.
Rusk’s men spread along the river behind them.
After twenty minutes, they reached a ridge overlooking Morrow Road.
A large stone house stood beyond the trees.
No lights showed in the windows.
Ethan pointed toward the basement.
“The blue room is under there.”
Caroline looked at Ortiz.
“You said Northstar House was a medical facility.”
“It is.”
A generator hummed beneath the snow.
Through a lower window, Caroline saw rows of hospital beds.
Children lay in them.
More than a dozen.
At the center of the room, Rachel Ward was strapped to a chair.
Caleb stood behind her.
He had escaped the ditch.
He placed a phone against Rachel’s ear.
A moment later, Ethan’s stolen hospital radio activated.
Rachel’s voice came through.
“Ethan, don’t come inside.”
Caleb leaned close enough for them to hear him breathing.
Then he whispered into the call.

“Bring me the ledger, or your mother watches Lily die first.”
👉 Northstar House contained an entire hidden ward of stolen children, and Caleb was using Rachel to lure Ethan directly into the trap.
