Richard Bennett married Evelyn Shaw at twenty-two.
Marriage lasted eleven months.
Annulled.
No children listed.
The family buried the history so completely even Audrey never heard of it.
Why?
Teresa claimed she did not know until years into her own marriage.
Samuel knew because he handled Charles’s personal affairs.
Evelyn worked in land-title administration.
After the annulment, Charles hired her briefly to organize Bennett property records.
She later moved away.
Then her signature reappeared on the family settlement decades later.
Impossible unless she returned.
Or someone copied it.
Rebecca compared.
The settlement document contained a witness certification:
E. Shaw.
Why would Richard use an ex-wife to witness Audrey’s forged signature?
Because Evelyn had professional credentials.
Her name gave legitimacy.

Evelyn Shaw Morgan.
Age sixty-three.
Maryland.
Retired title examiner.
Audrey contacted her through counsel.
Evelyn responded within an hour.
“I have been waiting for one of Richard’s daughters to call me.”
They met virtually.
Evelyn’s first sentence:
“I never witnessed Audrey Bennett sign anything.”
Another forgery.
“Did you know your signature was used?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“David Bennett told me.”
David again.
He found her two months ago.
Evelyn had provided a sworn affidavit denying involvement.

Rebecca found it.
The affidavit could destroy the family settlement.
Then Evelyn explained deeper history.
Richard’s marriage to her ended because Charles discovered Richard had forged a land-option agreement using Charles’s signature.
Audrey stared.
“He was doing this at twenty-two?”
“Yes.”
Charles forced Richard to unwind the transaction.
Evelyn wanted out.
Annulment.
Charles kept the scandal private to protect Bennett Construction.
That secrecy taught Richard something dangerous:
Family would repair consequences quietly.
Years later, same pattern.
Teresa’s notary fraud.
Claudia’s hidden trust.
Audrey’s land.
Claire’s paternity.
All “managed” privately.
No external accountability.
Until David.
Evelyn continued:
“Richard learned from Charles too.”
Audrey frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Your grandfather wasn’t innocent.”
Samuel looked uncomfortable.
Charles was not a villain in the same way.
But he had protected Richard repeatedly.
Paid settlements.
Silenced disputes.
Moved assets instead of confronting behavior.
His later will tried to correct control without exposing history.
That preserved inheritance but also preserved secrecy.
Audrey sighed.
Another generation trying to solve truth through paperwork.
Then Evelyn said:
“There is one reason Richard cannot let the Ridge records enter open court.”
“What?”
“Parcel Three has an old environmental indemnity.”
Rebecca straightened.
“Contamination?”
“Possible groundwater issue from an industrial tenant in the 1980s.”
Audrey stared.
Northstar knew?
Apparently not fully.
Charles settled a cleanup privately.
Richard later signed documents stating no known historical contamination.
If the old land files surfaced, Northstar could discover risk.
Richard’s $8.5 million sale might collapse even without ownership fraud.
More motive for secrecy.
But Evelyn’s bigger concern:
The indemnity agreement had Richard’s forged signature of Charles.
Again.
If exposed, it showed a pattern stretching decades.
Potential civil consequences.
Possibly more depending on statutes and subsequent representations.
Then Evelyn produced one original.
Charles had kept it with her because he feared Richard would destroy it.
David knew.
He planned to combine Evelyn’s affidavit with Samuel’s will and Claudia’s emails.
That was the case.
Not murder.
Not mysterious hidden killers.
Documented, boring, devastating fraud.
Audrey almost felt grateful for its mundanity.
Until Evelyn said:
“David asked me something strange.”
“What?”
“He asked whether Richard ever used a private investigator named Paul Mercer.”
Audrey frowned.
“No idea.”
Samuel knew.
Paul Mercer worked for Charles years ago.
He investigated Claire’s paternity claim.
Also Richard’s finances.
Died six years ago.
Why did David care?
Because a payment to Mercer appeared one week before David’s death.
From Bennett Construction.
But Paul Mercer was dead.
Payment actually went to Mercer Investigations LLC, now run by his son:
Nathan Mercer.
Detective Hayes contacted him.
Nathan cooperated.
Richard hired him.
Assignment:
Surveillance of David Bennett.
Audrey froze.
“How long?”
“Three weeks.”
“Why?”
“Client said David was stealing family documents.”
“What did you do?”
“Followed him.”
“Where?”
Samuel’s office.
Claire’s meeting.
Keystone Bank.
Neurologist.
David’s jogging route.
Audrey’s skin prickled.
“His jogging route?”
“Yes.”
“Did you follow him the morning he died?”
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.”
Silence.
“What happened?”
“He started running at 6:10.”
“And?”
“I followed from a distance.”
“At 6:42?”
“He collapsed.”
Audrey stopped breathing.
Nathan had witnessed David’s death.
“Did you call 911?”
“Yes.”
Audrey remembered the anonymous caller who found David.
Police said a passerby.
It was Nathan Mercer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Richard told me not to reveal the surveillance.”
“Did anyone approach David?”
“No.”
“Did anyone harm him?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What did you see?”
“David stopped suddenly. Held his head. Went down.”
Consistent with aneurysm rupture.
No attacker.
No suspicious contact.
For the first time, Audrey received direct witness confirmation.
Her husband’s death was tragic.
Not apparently caused by her family.
The relief hurt.
Then Nathan added:
“But after the ambulance left, Richard asked me something.”
“What?”
“Whether David had been carrying a document case.”
Audrey stared.
“He was?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to it?”
“I gave it to Richard.”
Silence.
Nathan had taken David’s case from the scene before police inventoried personal effects.
Richard had obtained David’s papers immediately after his death.
“What was inside?”
“I didn’t open it.”
