Chapter 12 - the case Richard removed from the sidewalk
Nathan Mercer described the case.
Dark brown leather.
Brass clasp.
David’s initials.
The same design as the one later found in Ethan’s stolen Mercedes?
Audrey compared photographs.
Different size.
David owned two.
One recovered.
One missing.
Nathan handed the smaller case directly to Richard near the hospital two hours after David died.
Why Richard?
Because Richard was Nathan’s client.
Nathan had made a terrible ethical choice.
Possibly criminal evidence interference depending on circumstances.
He admitted it.
“What did Richard say?”
“Nothing. He opened it.”
“In front of you?”
“Yes.”
“What was inside?”
“Documents. A drive. An envelope.”
“What envelope?”
Nathan remembered:
CHARLES BENNETT — ORIGINAL.
Samuel stood.
“That could be the second will.”
“Anything else?”
“A photograph.”
“Of what?”
“A woman.”
Nathan could not identify.
Richard looked at it and said:
“David went too far.”
Then ordered Nathan never to mention the case.
Where was it now?
Nathan did not know.
Search of Richard’s properties resumed.

RICHARD:

Rebecca read it.
“What?”
Samuel frowned.
Charles’s contingent clause referred to “any verified unacknowledged descendant of Richard Bennett.”
Everyone assumed Claire.
Could there be another?
Teresa went pale when told.
“No.”
Audrey noticed.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“Mom.”
Teresa broke.
“There was a boy.”
Silence.
Richard allegedly fathered a son while traveling for work in the early 1990s.
Unconfirmed.
Woman:
Melissa Grant.
Richard denied.
Charles investigated.
Could not establish certainty.
Teresa forced Richard to cut contact.
Any child would now be early thirties.
Name unknown.
Audrey almost laughed from exhaustion.
“How many families did Dad build around secrets?”
Teresa cried.
“I didn’t know what was true.”
“Did you try?”
“No.”
That answer mattered.
Then Samuel checked Charles’s notes.

Cleveland.

Jacob.
No verified surname.
Charles left the contingent clause broad because there may have been more than Claire.
Richard wanted the clause eliminated entirely before selling Ridge.
If another claimant emerged later, buyer title could face dispute.
Northstar demanded releases from known claimants.
Richard could not identify all.
So he needed Audrey to sign a broad indemnification.
Meaning if future claims appeared, Audrey could personally bear financial liability.
Richard was not just stealing her property.
He was trying to make her absorb risks created by his own past.
Then David’s drive produced one last hidden spreadsheet.

Audrey stared.
“Unknown 1989?”
Claudia looked confused.
Teresa closed her eyes.
“What now?”

Everyone froze.

Audrey stared at her mother.

David investigated.

Audrey felt emotionally numb.

Richard’s forged documents.

Paid for years.
After Victor died, Martin inherited the files.
That explained Martin’s power.
Then Audrey looked at the charred case.
David had not been chasing one crime.
He was reconstructing a family system built on hidden identities, forged ownership, and paid silence.
Then Rebecca received a notification.
Martin Hale wanted immunity consideration.
He had one thing to trade.
Victor’s archive.
Still intact.
Not burned.
Stored in a private vault.
And according to Martin—
it included Teresa’s 1989 adoption file.
