Chapter 13 - aunt Diane’s return
Diane Bennett had not lived in California for six months.
She lived fifteen minutes from Richmond under her married name.
Diane Mercer.
Claire stared at the address.
“She never told us she came back.”
Evelyn looked devastated.
“My sister stopped speaking to me after Dad’s estate fight.”
Claire remembered fragments.
Arguments after her grandfather died.

The corporate vote had been rescheduled for that afternoon through an emergency board procedure.
Claire stared.
“How?”

“She has another proxy.”
“Whose?”
“Robert Bennett’s.”
“My father is dead.”
“Not the proxy.”
Thomas explained.
Years before his death, Robert created a secondary voting instrument allowing a designated family representative to act if Claire became unavailable.
The designation was sealed.

“Who did Dad name?”

“Signed by Evelyn?”
“Yes.”

Claire stopped breathing.
