Chapter 14 - Robert’s hidden room
Bennett Foods headquarters had been built around the company’s original administrative building.
Robert Bennett’s old office no longer existed on the public floor plan.
But Thomas knew where it had been.
“Basement archive.”
Police escorted him through the building in handcuffs.
He stopped at a storage wall.
“This.”
There was no door.
Only shelving.
An officer moved the units.
Behind them was a steel panel.
Claire watched remotely from the secure location with Lily.
Officer Ruiz entered a code Thomas supplied.
Rejected.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Robert changed it.”
Lucy said:
“Try Lily’s birthday.”
Claire stared.
Ruiz entered six digits.
The door unlocked.
Her father had keyed the archive to Lily.
Inside were boxes.
Audio tapes.
Financial ledgers.
Legal files.
Photographs.
A complete history.
Robert had known.
Not everything.
But enough.
The first folder:
ARLINGTON — SARAH MONROE.
Lucy began crying when Ruiz opened it.
Robert had investigated after hearing rumors Thomas manipulated the guardianship case.
He found evidence Diane financed Marion.
He tried to locate Lucy.
Failed.
The second:
BELL / BENNETT FOODS.
Thomas’s early work.
Conflicts.
Hidden shell companies.

DIANE.
Bank records.
Deferred sale agreement.
Private payments.
Then a sealed envelope:
FOR CLAIRE IF DIANE RETURNS.
Claire’s hands shook as Ruiz read it to her over video.
Claire,
If you are hearing this, I was not able to resolve something before I left.
Do not trust any emergency attempt to remove Lily from your custody that involves Bennett Foods.
Claire covered her mouth.
Robert had predicted the structure.
He continued.
Your aunt believes the family stole the company from her. She is wrong about many things and right about one: our father manipulated the original share sale.
Claire stared.
So Diane had been cheated partly.
Not enough to justify anything that followed.
But enough to explain the bitterness.
Robert wrote that he planned to compensate Diane privately after reviewing old records.
Then Sarah Monroe discovered Diane had hidden money through Bennett Foods vendors.
Diane panicked.
Thomas offered a solution.
Discredit Sarah.
Use family court.
Remove Lucy temporarily.
By the time Robert understood what happened, Lucy had disappeared.
He tried to expose them.
Diane threatened to accuse him of corporate fraud using forged records.
Then she threatened something worse.
Claire.
And later Lily.
Robert had spent years building evidence until he believed he could act safely.
Three days before his fatal heart attack, he wrote:
THOMAS WANTS OUT.
DIANE WILL NOT LET HIM.
Claire stared at Thomas on the police feed.
“You wanted out?”
Thomas looked destroyed.
“Eventually.”
“You still helped her.”
“Yes.”
“You did it again to Lily.”
“Yes.”
No excuses.
Robert’s final pages described chest pain after a meeting with Diane.
Claire’s father officially died from cardiac arrest at home.
No autopsy.
Evelyn had refused one because his doctor said the death was natural.
Ruiz asked:
“Who was his doctor?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Dr. Leonard Shaw.”
Police checked.
Shaw retired soon afterward.
Current residence unknown.
But bank records showed a $250,000 payment from one of Diane’s companies two weeks after Robert died.
Claire went cold.
“Did Diane poison my father?”
No one knew.
Yet.
Then police heard movement above the archive.
Diane had entered headquarters through an executive entrance.
She was heading toward the basement.
Ruiz ordered officers into position.
Diane appeared at the end of the corridor.
She was seventy.
Elegant.
Gray hair pulled back.
She carried no visible weapon.
When she saw Thomas in cuffs, she stopped.
“You surrendered.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You coward.”
“No.”
His voice shook.
“I was one eighteen years ago.”
Lucy watched through the feed.
Diane saw her face on a monitor.
For the first time, she lost composure.
“Lucy.”
Lucy stared back.
“You knew where I was.”
Diane said nothing.
“You paid them.”
Silence.
“You let my mother die believing I was gone.”
Diane’s face hardened.
“Your mother would have destroyed everything.”
“So you destroyed her.”
Diane looked toward Claire’s feed.
“And now you think you’re different?”
Claire spoke into the monitor.
“I know I’m not perfect.”
Diane laughed.
“That isn’t what I meant.”
She looked at Lily sitting beside Claire.
“Robert chose your daughter over the rest of the family before she could walk.”
Claire held Lily closer.
“He protected her.”
“He erased me.”
“You did that yourself.”
Police moved toward Diane.
She raised her hands.
No resistance.
Then she smiled.
“You’re too late.”
Ruiz stopped.
“For what?”
“The vote?”
She laughed.
“I don’t care about the vote.”
“Then why come?”
“To make sure Robert’s archive opened.”
Everyone stared.
Diane had wanted them to find it?
She looked at Claire.
“Your father hid more than evidence against me.”
“What?”
“He hid why Lily owns thirty-eight percent of Bennett Foods.”
Claire frowned.
“Because he put it in her trust.”
“No.”
Diane shook her head.
“He didn’t own those shares.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“Then whose were they?”
Diane looked toward Lily.
“Her father’s.”
Jason.
Claire stared.
Jason had never mentioned owning Bennett Foods stock.
Diane continued:
“And Jason didn’t buy them.”
Claire felt the final layer shifting beneath them.
“Then how did he get them?”
Diane smiled sadly.
“Ask why Jason Carter changed his last name when he was eighteen.”
Officer Ruiz searched immediately.
Jason Carter had been born:
Jason Bennett.
Claire stared.
No.
Diane continued:
“He is not related to you.”
Different Bennett family.
Or supposedly.
Then she said:
“Robert discovered Jason’s birth records were sealed.”
“Why?”
“Because Jason’s biological mother was Sarah Monroe.”
Lucy stopped breathing.
Claire looked toward Lucy’s screen.
If that were true, Jason and Lucy were siblings.
Lily’s father was the missing child of the very woman whose custody case Thomas had manipulated.
And Lily’s ownership of Bennett Foods did not begin with Claire.
