Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s explanation
Vanessa did not deny taking the ledger.
“I copied it.”
“Did you tear out the pages?”
“No.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn’t. Verify it.”
That answer surprised Sophie.
Vanessa opened her laptop.
She had photographed every page.
Including 47 and 48.
Sophie stared.
The missing pages existed in Vanessa’s photographs.
Daniel Carter appeared.
Capital contribution: $72,000.
But beside the entry George had written:
Temporary holding — see VC agreement.
Sophie frowned.
“VC?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
The next line was stranger.
Do not distribute until Carter matter is resolved.
Vanessa leaned back.
“That’s why I started asking questions.”
Sophie studied the photographs.
“If you knew Daniel’s contribution was real, why tell me his name wasn’t in the ledger?”
“Because I wanted you to force Martin to show you everything.”
Sophie’s anger rose.
“You could have told me.”
“And you would have listened?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked at her sadly.
“No, Sophie. You decided I was stealing from Emma before you asked one question.”
Sophie almost responded.
Then remembered the forged letter.
The guardianship petition.
Emma’s coached statements.
“No. I decided you were stealing from Emma after you forged documents.”
Vanessa looked away.
That landed.
“Did you forge the letter to Martin?”
“Yes.”
Claire swore under her breath.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted the review triggered.”
“There it is.”
“Not to take Emma’s money.”
“Then why?”
“To force the trust company to examine the underlying ownership.”
Sophie stared.
“You used my child’s residence to trigger a financial investigation?”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“I thought Dad was hiding something.”
“So you manipulated an eight-year-old.”
“I never told Mom to throw her out.”
“You told her to make Emma want to leave.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Sophie continued:
“You told Emma judges ask children where they want to live.”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I was wrong.”
“That’s a small word.”
“I know.”
Then Vanessa finally explained what started her suspicion.
Six months earlier, she had received an anonymous envelope.
Inside was a copy of Daniel’s $72,000 transfer.
And another bank record.
Two days after Daniel transferred the money, George transferred exactly $72,000 out.
Recipient:
VC Development LLC.
“Who owns VC Development?” Claire asked.
Vanessa answered:
“That’s what I’ve been trying to learn.”
Martin had never heard of it.
Public records showed VC Development dissolved years ago.
Its manager:
Victor Caldwell.
Sophie did not recognize the name.
Margaret did.
Her face went pale when Sophie called her.
“Victor?”
“Yes.”
Margaret became quiet.
“Mom?”
“He was your father’s business partner before you girls were adults.”
“Why have I never heard of him?”
“Because George hated him.”
“What happened?”
Margaret hesitated.
“They bought property together. Then something went wrong.”
“What?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
Victor disappeared from the business almost twenty years ago.
George never mentioned him afterward.
Yet Daniel’s investment money had been transferred to Victor’s company.
That did not mean Daniel never invested.
It meant George moved the money elsewhere.
Why?
Vanessa’s anonymous envelope contained one final page.
A photocopy of a promissory note.
VC Development owed Daniel Carter $72,000 plus interest.
Sophie’s hands shook.
“Daniel lent Victor money?”
“Looks like it.”
“Through Dad?”
“Maybe.”
Then Vanessa said something Sophie was not prepared for.
“I think Dad gave Emma forty percent because Daniel never got paid back.”
That would make sense.
Except the debt with interest would not reach millions.
Unless Daniel’s money bought something else.
Sophie asked:
“Who sent you the envelope?”
“No name.”
“Postmark?”
“Santa Cruz.”
Claire looked up.
“Victor Caldwell still alive?”
Vanessa nodded.
“I found him.”
Sophie stared.
“Where?”
“Monterey.”
“And?”
“I called him.”
“What did he say?”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“He said Daniel’s seventy-two thousand didn’t buy twenty percent of Dad’s building.”
Sophie waited.
“What did it buy?”
Vanessa answered:
May you like
“Half of something George never put in the family books.”
👉 The missing ledger led Sophie to a forgotten former partner who claimed Daniel’s money purchased half of a secret asset George had deliberately kept outside the family company.
