Chapter 8 - Daniel’s letter

Sophie waited until they returned to Martin’s office.
She did not want to read Daniel’s words inside Victor Caldwell’s home.
The envelope had been sealed for years.
Daniel’s handwriting made her cry before she even opened it.
Soph,
If you’re reading this, George and I probably failed to clean this up before you had to know.
Sophie paused.
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel explained the investment.
He had put $72,000 into the hidden industrial property because George offered him a chance to secure Emma’s future.
Emma had been a toddler then.
Daniel believed the land might someday be worth something.
He also wrote:
Do not let anyone tell Emma she owes the family for what comes from this. It is hers because I paid for it, and because George promised me he would protect it if anything happened to me.
Sophie pressed the paper against her mouth.
Daniel had been thinking about their daughter even then.
The next section changed everything.
George is worried because someone keeps pressuring Margaret to sign family property papers without reading them.
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa whispered:
“Victor.”
Maybe.
Daniel continued:
He believes Vanessa has been pulled into it through her old job, but he doesn’t think she understands what she is doing.
Vanessa began crying.
Daniel had not blamed her.
He had recognized she was being used.
Then:
If George becomes sick again, ask Martin to check every document Margaret notarizes. She signs when she’s scared.
Sophie stared.
Daniel had understood Margaret too.
Not malicious by nature.
Easily frightened.
Easily controlled.
But still responsible for her choices.
The final paragraph was stranger.
If anything happens to me before this is settled, don’t let George blame himself.
The truck has been acting strange, and George thinks I’m being paranoid.
Sophie stopped.
The room went silent.
Daniel died in a highway accident.
His pickup lost control during heavy rain.
Police attributed it to a tire failure.
Sophie reread the sentence.
The truck has been acting strange.
Martin asked:
“Did Daniel ever mention mechanical problems?”
“No.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Maybe it’s unrelated.”
Sophie knew that.
A warning was not proof.
The letter continued:
Victor says he can have it checked Tuesday.
Daniel died Monday night.
Victor stared when Martin called him.
“I never said that.”
Sophie stood.
“What?”
“I never offered to check Daniel’s truck.”
“His letter says Victor.”
“I haven’t touched a vehicle in thirty years.”
“Then who did he mean?”
Victor went silent.
“There was another Victor.”
Everyone stared.
Victor Caldwell explained that Caldwell Property Services had employed a manager named Victor Blake.
Vanessa’s future father-in-law.
Father of her husband, Eric Blake.
Sophie felt the room tilt.
Vanessa whispered:
“My father-in-law?”
Victor Blake died two years ago.
He had worked in automotive fleet management before real estate.
He was the person who recruited Vanessa into Caldwell Property Services.
And perhaps the person Daniel intended to have inspect his truck.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Eric never told me his dad knew Daniel.”
Sophie asked:
“Does Eric know about Emma’s trust?”
Vanessa did not answer immediately.
That pause was enough.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Everything.”
Claire stared.
“You told your husband?”
“He’s my husband.”
Sophie’s anger returned.
“The anonymous envelope was addressed to you.”
“Yes.”
“Could Eric have sent it?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Martin checked corporate records.
Eric Blake currently operated a commercial finance company.
One of its recent clients:
Dalton Family Holdings.
Sophie stared.
“My father did business with Eric?”
After George’s death, Margaret had signed a refinancing proposal through Eric’s company.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“She told me she hadn’t changed anything.”
Martin found the filing.
Margaret had pledged part of her family interest as collateral for a $600,000 line of credit.
Borrower:
Dalton Family Holdings.
Authorized representative:
Vanessa Blake.
Vanessa stood.
“I never authorized that.”
Another forged signature.
This time hers.
Sophie looked at her sister.
For the first time, Vanessa no longer looked like the architect.
She looked like another person whose name had been used.
Then Vanessa’s phone rang.
Eric.
She stared at the screen.
Sophie said:
“Answer it.”
Vanessa put him on speaker.
“Hey.”
Eric’s voice sounded relaxed.
“Where are you?”
“With Sophie.”
Silence.
Then:
“Why?”
“We found Dad’s old records.”
Another silence.
Longer.
Finally Eric asked:
“Which records?”
Sophie and Vanessa exchanged a look.
Vanessa answered:
“Daniel’s truck.”
The call ended.

Eric hung up.
👉 Daniel’s final letter unexpectedly connected his pre-crash fears to Vanessa’s father-in-law, while Vanessa discovered her own husband had access to the family finances and reacted immediately when Daniel’s truck was mentioned.
