Chapter 22 - THE LAWYER WHO ARRANGED THE MARRIAGEThomas Mitchell called the escrow a protection fund.
It paid for sealed residences, emergency lawyers, medical care, school tuition, and witness relocation.
It also paid Thomas personally.
His private homes.
Mark’s inheritance.
Jenna’s legal education.
Court clerks who moved filings.
Dr. Crane’s consulting fees.
The fund protected some people from dangers the same network created.
Thomas had represented Richard during Marianne’s first custody case. He helped obtain the order barring Helen Parker from contacting her.
At the time, he claimed he believed the psychiatric diagnosis.
Later evidence removed that defense.
Thomas saw the crossed-out toxicology request.
He knew Marianne’s symptoms appeared after Richard delivered drinks.
He still argued that delaying testing protected Eleanor from a public scandal.
“Did you believe that?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you also receive shares after Richard regained control?”
“Yes.”
Both motives existed.
Thomas staged his death when a former client threatened to expose the escrow. Mark was twelve. Thomas’s wife signed the closed cremation order after being told the family would be harmed if she refused.
Thomas then watched his son from hiding.
He arranged scholarships.
Created the marriage condition.
Placed Mark at the Hayes Foundation alumni event where Eleanor attended.
“I did not force them to fall in love,” he said.
“You manufactured the meeting and tied money to the marriage,” the prosecutor answered.
“Yes.”
“Did you tell either person?”
“No.”
Thomas claimed the arrangement originally protected Mark from Richard. A marriage to Eleanor could place the young man near enough to expose Hayes Biomedical.
Instead, Thomas taught him to see Eleanor as access.
Mark turned access into poisoning.
Thomas did not crush the tablets.
He helped design the conditions in which his son believed taking control was an inheritance.
He entered a plea to conspiracy, trust fraud, obstruction, evidence manipulation, unlawful financial transfers, and facilitation of fraudulent custody proceedings.
Older charges connected to Marianne faced limitation and evidence problems. Historical findings still corrected the record.
His cooperation located escrow properties and surviving victims. His age and health affected placement.
He received prison followed by supervised release.
At sentencing, Mark watched from another facility.
Thomas addressed him through the court.
“I made your marriage part of a plan.”
Mark’s face hardened.
“You left me.”
“Yes.”
“You came back when my business failed and told me Eleanor was the reason I felt small.”
“Yes.”
“You made me this.”
Thomas looked toward the judge.
“No. I trained him to interpret control as safety. He chose what he did with that training.”
Mark began crying.
The admission did not reunite them.
Thomas surrendered all claims to Mark’s loyalty and April’s trust.
The escrow funded restitution after lawful ownership was reviewed. Properties bought from victims were returned where possible. Good-faith residents were protected while compensation came from other assets.
Thomas also revealed Lisa’s history.
Richard funded her early records work after she altered Marianne’s file. Lisa later turned against him when she discovered he had hidden Lena and planned to eliminate Jenna.
“She believed the only way to defeat Richard was to build a system he could not own,” Thomas said.
“She chose children,” the prosecutor replied.
“Yes.”
“Did you help?”
“I gave her courthouse access.”
Thomas had thought the Children’s Ledger would contain evidence only.
When he learned Lisa tied money and authority to minors, he continued because the system gave him leverage against Richard.
No adult had misunderstood enough to become blameless.
Jenna and Lena were scheduled to testify against Lisa.
Before the hearing, Lisa sent both daughters the same handwritten message:
One of you lived because the other remained useful.
Jenna tore hers in half.
Lena preserved hers as evidence.
