Chapter 23 - THE TWO DAUGHTERS LISA USEDJenna and Lena met without Lisa present.
The room contained two chairs, one table, and no mirror.
For most of her life, Jenna believed her face belonged only to her. Lena had spent years being told the same face was a tool.
“Did you know about me?” Lena asked.
“No.”
“Mother showed me videos of your graduation.”
“I thought she was dead by then.”
“She visited me that night.”
Jenna looked away.
Lisa had attended one daughter’s milestones secretly while the other grieved her.
The records showed Lisa initially surrendered Lena under threat. Years later, she found her inside a Hayes residence and could have approached authorities.
She did not.
She believed Lena’s unregistered identity offered strategic value.
She educated her, protected her from Richard, and denied her a lawful name.
Lena learned court procedures by impersonating Jenna after hours. She entered evidence rooms, hospitals, and private trusts. Sometimes she preserved files Lisa feared would disappear.
Other times, she helped forge authorizations and relocate children.
“I believed every family in the ledger was dangerous,” Lena testified.
“Did you verify?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“Did you know April had not consented to the courtroom test?”
“Yes.”
“Why stand beside her?”
“Lisa said Eleanor would choose the trust over her daughter if the door opened.”
“What did you see?”
“Eleanor stopped hitting the glass when April became more frightened. She watched April instead of the door.”
Lisa’s test had produced an answer.
She had no right to demand it.
Jenna admitted manipulating Judge Parker’s case rotation and uploading evidence early. She intended the real recording to reach a judge who knew Marianne’s sunflower code.
She also helped create the duplicate tablet and false custody exhibits so Richard and Lisa would continue trusting her.
“Did you need to include fabricated videos of Eleanor harming April?” the judge asked.
“No.”
“Why did you?”
“Richard expected them.”
“You placed a child’s synthetic scream inside a court file.”
“Yes.”
Jenna entered a plea to evidence tampering, unauthorized system access, obstruction, and conspiracy. Her cooperation, warning to April, and role preserving evidence reduced punishment. Her misuse of the court remained serious.
She received a short custodial term, probation, and permanent disqualification from court-record administration.
Lena pleaded guilty to identity fraud, unlawful entry, child relocation, evidence tampering, and participation in the courtroom confinement. Her lifelong lack of legal identity, coercion, and eventual refusal to restrain April affected sentencing.
She served a longer treatment-focused term followed by supervision.
The state issued her first valid birth certificate after a judicial process independent of Lisa.
The name read Lena Cole because she chose it.
Jenna kept her own name.
They did not begin calling each other sister immediately.
Their first continuing relationship involved exchanging factual corrections to their childhood files.
Lisa asked to meet them together.
Both refused.
She received separate legal notices explaining their decisions. No daughter became responsible for comforting her before trial.
Jenna destroyed her personal copy of Lisa’s message after appeals preserved it.
Lena kept hers for years, then decided it no longer explained her survival.
At Lisa’s pretrial hearing, prosecutors introduced the fingerprint found beneath the blue mug’s handle.
It belonged to Lisa.
The rare neurological compound found in Eleanor’s blood was also detected on a medical glove recovered from Lisa’s residence.
She had not merely watched Mark and Brooke poison Eleanor.
She had prepared part of the mixture.
Lisa’s attorney argued the dose was intended to be detectable, not permanently harmful. Lisa wanted toxicology to expose Richard’s method.
An internal message contradicted her.
If Eleanor remains coherent, increase until the court accepts inherited instability.
