Chapter 6 - Ryan’s Version of the CrashRyan requested to speak with Hannah.

Officer Ruiz advised against it, but Hannah agreed through reinforced glass with a detective present.

Ryan entered wearing hospital-issued clothing because police had seized his shirt for evidence. A bruise marked his shoulder where officers restrained him in the foyer.

He looked nothing like the confident man who had stood over Eli.

“I didn’t kill Adam.”

“You followed him.”

“My mother was driving.”

“You were beside her.”

“We were trying to recover the evidence.”

“After he refused?”

“After Owen told us the files would destroy thousands of jobs.”

Hannah almost laughed.

“Eli has cracked ribs because you believed another corporate speech about protecting people.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I lost control.”

“You hit a nine-year-old repeatedly.”

“He stole the badge.”

“He protected evidence you intended to destroy.”

Ryan looked down.

“Yes.”

The admission was quiet.

It did not reduce the injury.

He described the highway pursuit five years earlier.

Judith intended to force Adam to stop at a rest area where Owen’s security team waited. Ryan called Adam and begged him to pull over.

Adam refused.

Judith accelerated.

The SUV struck the rear corner of Adam’s car.

He lost control and crossed the median.

Ryan claimed he wanted to call emergency services.

Judith took his phone.

Owen arrived before police and removed Adam’s evidence drive.

“Was Adam alive?” Hannah asked.

Ryan hesitated.

The detective leaned forward.

“Answer.”

“He was breathing when Owen reached the car.”

“What did Owen do?”

“He told us to leave.”

“Did he call an ambulance?”

“I don’t know.”

“You left my husband dying on the road.”

“Yes.”

Hannah’s hands remained flat against the table because she did not trust them to move.

“Then you married me.”

“My mother introduced us. At first, I was reporting to Owen.”

“At first?”

“I fell in love with you.”

“You watched my son grow up while hiding that you helped kill his father.”

“I did not know Adam would die.”

“You knew he might live if someone called for help.”

Ryan’s silence answered.

He offered information in exchange for protection.

Owen still had the external Project Hearth copy. It was stored inside a Meridian disaster-recovery facility beneath the old Riverside pediatric hospital.

Judith held the physical access key.

“Why did she order you to get my badge tonight?”

“The federal audit would lock the file at nine. Owen needed Hannah-level authentication to replace the raw data with a clean version.”

“Why involve Eli?”

“He walked into the office.”

“You could have stopped.”

“I thought he had hidden the badge chip.”

“He had.”

“I needed him to tell me where.”

“So you kept hitting him.”

Ryan covered his face.

“Yes.”

Detective Nora Bell asked who else participated in the call.

Ryan identified Owen and Judith.

Harold was physically present but repeatedly tried to stop the assault.

“Who said to leave the watch on Eli?” Nora asked.

Ryan looked up sharply.

Hannah had not heard that line in the first transcript.

Audio specialists found it beneath the sound of the television.

A woman whispered:

“Let the watch keep recording.”

Judith had been standing in the room.

The voice did not belong to her.

Ryan whispered, “That was my sister.”

Hannah knew Ryan had a younger sister named Claire Mercer who reportedly died from a medication overdose twelve years earlier.

Ryan shook his head.

“Claire is alive. Owen keeps her at Riverside.”

👉 The family member believed dead was still alive inside Meridian’s abandoned hospital—and she had deliberately allowed Eli’s watch to capture the assault.
